I find the Japanese use of funk and groove are quite different and more specific than western uses. I find it to be more what I would call fusion with a dash of smooth jazz. I’m not sure there is a genre specific term outside of Japan for this. It’s kinda a jam band meets jazz/fusion/smoothness - less soul than the word funk means to me.

That can be an issue. But, if you imagine selling a car, are you going to tell the potential buyer who asks what kind of car it is: “Well, it’s my car… has four wheels! - Want it?”

Yes, I might be inclined to also call it that… but, it’s not very “snappy” as genre labels go

And just to make sure: it’s great music! Just hard to describe… and I have the same “problem” with my own stuff:

Here’s another from them with a nice bass line, nothing too flashy just solid. Rina’s on a 6 string for this one.

I got a front seat to a NYC jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein show last week at the Parker Jazz Club here in Austin. Fantastic musicians.

That one’s kinda City Pop too yeah. Really it’s a pretty broad label ranging from jazz fusion to bossanova as long as it’s arranged that kind of soft-funk, upbeat way. A lot of YMO fits the bill, for example.

That’s a solid EP, Jörg. I think your first two tags (jazz fusion) cover it pretty well.

I got hooked on YMO in ‘78 when their first album was released. I have all 8 of their studio albums. They were so good for so long. Sadly, Sakamoto and Takahashi moved on to that great gig in the sky in 2023. RIP, brothers. I’ll be in the front row when it’s my turn.

They were both amazing, Ryuichi Sakamoto in particular was a huge loss.
