For the love of jazz

“Hey Joe” like no one else has played it. Killer guitar and bass work.

A week to the concert

Very cool tune! Thanks, @joergkutter!

But as a lifelong a video editor, I would’ve suggested to whomever edited this piece to just put down the apparently jumbo mug of caffeine and instead just chill the f**k out. The massive overuse of quick cuts in this video was maddening. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I hate that trend.

Hah, yeah, I almost got sea-sick now that you mentioned it… I guess I filtered it out somehow on my first view

A couple of shots of strong Italian espresso, most likely :joy:

I suspect it was a lot more than a couple. Perhaps it was a tad too much Bolivian Marching Powder.

It was just plain shitty editing. If there is a trend, it’s that more and more unskilled people are using decent footage to make badly edited videos.

Don’t get me wrong: There’s nothing wrong with using quick cuts; they can be extremely effective when executed correctly.

But this video was, like, tantamount to, like, somebody, like, using “like” too much. Like, totally.

As is true with bass playing, just having access to gear doesn’t mean someone will necessarily make good music with it.

You usually see it more with jump cuts than quick cuts, but it’s been a trend for years. Dislike it.

People have been noticing this for a long time. Random example,

I had the incredible luck to hear her sing and her band play in a colonial convent in a small town outside Mexico City and for free. 60 people at the most. It was an incredible experience that I remember perfectly 25-30 later.

Oh, I know. It has offended me and my editor friends for a long time. But its root cause is inartful, unskilled editors.

Years ago, when desktop video editing software was just becoming prevalent, a good friend and very seasoned pro editor lamented that it would take away work from actual editors. I told him then that that would never happen because skill and talent always win out. And, in the pro world, it has.

That’s not to suggest that the blind leading the blind hasn’t resulted in this or the other trend. It definitely has. But it’s easy to spot and generally easy to avoid.

Dig these true brothers grooving. It doesn’t get any tighter.

I was humbled and honored to see them live. In the fucking pocket.
