For the love of jazz

Bad mothers? Yeah the Dropkick Murphys sang about that.

Sticking with female singers - here is Danish singer Katrine Madsen from her 2000 record “My Secret” with the aptly titled “Let’s Make Music”:

Etta at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Old school. When she was training, they would punch her in her stomach while she sang to build up her power. Times have changed.

Love Etta.

I was on vacation in Santa Fe back in 2003 and I just missed out seeing her in a cool little theater. It was sold out way in advance, of course.

Yep, good one - I own that CD…

Another awesome singer with a killer backing band (and we could really put the whole live album here easily, but this one’s especially cool on bass and sax):

And now for something completely different:

New album out next month!

Another of my faves and the single influence on baritone tone for me, Leo Parker.

Oh that old wooden barn door howl he gets!

It’s funny - as much as I love saxophone, I never really gelled with the sound of a bari… something just doesn’t sit right with me, be it old school or more modern baritone saxophonists… don’t know why.

Here is Barbara Thompson on soprano. Great solo, and from the way it is built up you just know she needs to hit that high note in the end!
She sadly passed away a year ago after having battled Parkinson’s for 25 years:

I played tenor in college in large ensembles and jazz band because I love its tone, size and feel. But I played alto for my private lessons.

The alto’s key, ergos and sweet voice fit the fast-tempo classical violin pieces my teacher, Dr. Nascimben, threw at me weekly. When he’d demo how a passage was supposed to be played, his sweet tone, dynamics and technique were inspirational and very moving.

Here’s an alto masterpiece, Art Pepper “Patricia”

She’s just a genius and has assembled a great band around her. There’s some awesome live vids too.

The composer, bandleader and generally all around amazing musician is the woman at the start with the donut-shaped biscuit, Yoko Kanno. Long career of amazing scores for animated shows, including that song (from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack I linked above). She’s incredible.

(I can tell you what that biscuit is too; it’s this donut shaped biscuit/scone thing that Seijo Ishii (upscale market) sells. I love them )

There are may covers of “Feel like I’m making love” by Roberta Flack (which I like it, too) but the version I like most is this one by a japanese neo-soul guitarist Toshiki Soejima:

The bass player, Yoshida Yoshua, is really exceptional.
