Fretless Fan Club

Just ordered another fretless. Sire Z7.

Wife gave me the green light when I told her that - if I like it, it will replace either my current fretless or my 5-string, which I’ll sell on to keep the same number of instruments in the house.

Awesome. I can’t wait to hear how you like it. I have 3 Sires and keep telling myself that my next won’t be a Sire, but they are so good.

My first was a Sire V3p. Incredibly nice.

I’m looking forward to this. It’s spec’ed pretty much exactly what I’m looking for in a fretless. The question is what I sell when I decide to keep it?

I’ve got a fretless P-bass (90’s Fender with a Warmouth neck), and a Sterling Ray 35HH. I expect to like the fretless Z7 better than both of those. I want a bass with a Low-B for hip hop.

I could go (in order I think I’m likely to pick):

  1. Sire strung EADG, fretless P-bass BEAD for hip hop, sell Ray 35
  2. Sire strung BEAD for hip hop, fretless P stayes EADG, sell Ray 35
  3. Sire strung EADG, Ray 35 for hip hop, sell fretless P?

I will keep everyone update.

My bass just arrived. I slept one hour last night so unboxing will be later today.

I spent a few hours disassembling, cleaning, assembling, and setup. The stacked pot and volume pot will eventually be replaced but it all works and I have to say ibanez makes a great product for the price point. The jack mod lets me use plug-ins without an extension cord which was a pita.

The description on reverb was “white”. I was pleasantly surprised it is pearl white.

Very nice. I bet that pearl white is gorgeous in person. You’re going to have a lot of fun with that! Which model is it?

Yup. Great value. Up there with Sire and Yamaha. I just wish the necks worked better for my hands, but they’re too thin and just not quite shaped right for my hands. Which is a shame.

The one issue they seem to have semi-regularly is that barrel jack. They go bad more than other designs. And it’s easy to mix up which wire goes where. Last one I had, I put the power on the wrong tab, and the bass played fine, but stayed powered on when unplugged. Ate two batteries before I figured it out and fixed it. Not a big deal though.

SR300EF? . Not sure if finish denotes anything. The jacks do suck I guess but very simple to swap if need be.

I hate them. Unfortunately the SBVs also have them (or similar).

…and sometimes a plan just comes together…

Beautiful fingerboard. Would it fits?

YES SIR!!!

The gentleman received it with his JB-2 that he purchased about a year ago. He decided that he would never use it, so he offered it for sale. We were thinking of going to Beaverton in a few weeks, so I decided that I should scan the Portland Craigslist.

That is absolutely Beautiful, I’ll give you 50 for it :rofl:

I’d urge you to consider the CA finish to really showcase the fingerboard.

Cost me four times that to get it to my porch!!!

Seller was really nice and probably would have shipped it for the cost of shipping, but |I paid him to have UPS pack it, plus gas and beer money.

Stuff is a PITA to sand, but I am not opposed to some sort of coating.

Apparently binary epoxy is a better option. Never tried either myself.

Mike Lull will do a polyester w/pleck and setup for about $700

There’s a guy in Florida that will do epoxy w/dual pleck (before and after) for $1,200.

I suppose maybe you could do your own coating, and then have it plecked for $299?
