From what I can tell, the consensus seems to be CA is good but has all the lovely attributes of super glue while you’re applying it, and can take several coats; marine epoxy is much better and easier but takes much longer to cure between coats (but only needs 1-2 coats.)

Al’s done the CA route a bunch so he can give tons of tips there.

What does PLEK even do for a fretless? Sand the fretboard? I would do this myself.

However a poly coating sounds like a really good path.

This gorgeous, sexy, and sounds amazing fretless bass. Started life as a cheap Chinese special named Glarry. That I bought from Temu for $72 back on December 2024. Well the neck needed to be finished. Because they didn’t bother to even sand the neck let alone apply the finish.

So I pulled her apart completely, and finished the neck. Then I put the Evil Genius Creations funk on the electronics.

I bought Guyker tuners and was split coil pick up. Under that beautiful Chrome bridge cover. Is a black two saddle bridge I got from Amazon years ago.

I also have her sister with the sunburst body. Who is still in pieces. Who is waiting for me to finish her up. A routed the double jazz pickup cavity. Which is going to house this double jazz humbucker. There I bought from eBay for like $30 a few years ago as well.

I had to show off my blonde fretless! Then I had to mention my sunburst fretless as well.

This is the start of routing out the pickup cavity for that double j humbucker. I also routed out the cavity for the Stratocaster style output Jack. I bought Ms. Sunburst December 2025. In February of 2025 I started this process. She will be finished sometime this year hopefully before my birthday which is October 19th. What y’all think of my beautiful babies.

My fretless conversion came in the form of an upright. It’s fire, I love it. I’ve found i look for microtones now even on my fretted basses. I also find i have more errors on them-fret spacing issues- I’ll sort that by ear.

This is off, I’m a didactic player. I know zero about music and can’t read it. I can’t tell what note I’m in. I can fake it good with marker dots, but I play with shape and sound.

I set up my upright, and I got it right. I know gear and work and good sound. But I get string zing, particularly when hitting d and e (5/7) on the a string.
I know i miss, I can hear it. But this is not me flubbing. Anyone know what this is? I’ve heard about Vaseline on new strings to mellow the sound?

Anyone who wants a clip or knows an answer, I’ll look back here.

Ive been splitting time with the electric bass and an upright since April. Im kinda digging the upright though. I was planning on debuting the upright at our Halloween gig, but the venue closed up. So we will see. My next challenge is going to be thumb position on upright and im not looking forward to it actually. Im also considering a Pete Wernick camp to get some bluegrass jam circles in my arsenal.

Why not make it flat and no radius. My first Lignum fretless has 0* radius. Sounds and feels awesome, plenty of mawh and predictable slides.

Lignum made me 2 fretless neck in maple unfinished virtually flat, I put one on my Short Scale already and deciding if I’m going to put one on this SB14 reissue or refinish my original SB14

Man I love Phil Collins drum fills

You could; the surface I was referring to would be the inconsistency of the polyester or urethane resin applied to the neck. Nothing is geometrically perfect as our minds imagine. Every surface has inconsistencies.

I finally gave in to peer pressure and purchased a set of TI jazz flats for the Sire Z7.

I understand the hype.
