Unrelated, I just also randomly discovered an article with a bass that has pickups that look like the Talking Bass guy’s, they’re called Sims Super Quads. Kinda like Fluences, I guess; they can change to P, J, MM voicings, etc.

I built a ‘test bed’ bass out of a used Ray4 I got at GC for $189.
Modded a nice big flexible cavity to put in any pickups at all, with the intent on trying out the SIMs. Paired them with a Glockenklang 3-band preamp that goes active / passive. Liked it so much as is I kept them in the bass for now. Need to do a video one day of all the tonal options compared. It’s a lot of fun to play and I like some of the oddball config options. It’s like 15 basses in 1

Building a test bed bass

I thought I would start a separate thread to chronicle the mods to make a ‘test bed’ bass. The idea is, to have a bass that it will be ‘easy-ish’ to swap pickups/preamps etc and fiddle over time. The first test case will be the electronics that will ultimately go into a custom design bass I am working on.
