GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 1)

Listening to them, I’m finding out that I like the Orange and Markbass cabs the most, and the GK stuff. And Trace Elliot.

I’ve emailed Darkglass about using IRs with their bass cabs to see what they say. At the least I can use IRs for recording.

These are also a thing:

There’s an entire thread over on TalkBass about IRs:

This will be the same as running a cabinet color through a cabinet color. To the extent the physical cabinet is sufficiently full range and flat, the IR won’t get as much of its color.

HAHAHA, you could make a fortune selling them. Just say you need it, and watch the orders come in.

Nice, but I went with the original Chibson Placebo pedal instead. Fully transparent.

That’s why I’m asking Darkglass, because it’s listed as 36Hz to 15kHz (there’s a tweeter in it) and uses a custom driver from Eminence.

I know Barefaced lists the Super Midget (1x12/tweeter) among their FRFR cabs and bass cabs, and also uses a custom driver (coincidentally from Eminence, too, iirc), but they also list the frequency response up to 20kHz. I don’t know how much the upper reach of either cab really matters on an instrument that tops out much, much lower, and even whose harmonics tap out way below that, too.

I’ve almost always used bass amps for guitar, though, and I thought some of the guitar IRs sounded pretty good with my guitar (as did just the cab itself). I imagine the cabsim in the amp is more for the Direct Out than anything, though.

For a speaker with a very flat response like monitors or a PA, cabsims make sense. For a speaker in a bass cab it would depend on what the repsonse of the speaker looked like. And adding one color to another might be interesting anyway.

My only worry would be if the response curve of the actual cab would make it sound muffled or farty with an IR applied on top.

I’d say just try it, no reason to wait to hear from Darkglass.

Wow, only $99.00. I need 5 of those.

I have tried it and it changes the tone, I just don’t know how accurate it is. Sounds pretty good either way, in some cases; I just don’t want to buy more IRs for the time being if it won’t be accurate to the demos heard on the sale sites. Considering there are IRs for their own bass cabs, I’m going to assume there is some coloring going on or why bother including them? (maybe just for marketing lol…). My cab is actually absent from the Factory IRs. It could be “who cares about a 1x12 anyway?” but I figure it’s worth a shot to hear from Darkglass about it, too.

I mean a 2x12, 2x10, 4x12, and 8x10 fridge should have some tonal differences anyway just due to the box design/size.

Not that I can load IRs anyway lol…

I think this is one of those cases where you don’t shoot for accuracy, you just shoot for “sounds good”. For accuracy you’ll need to use the cabsims with PA’s.

Hey, I think the Darkglass cabsims only work with the headphone jack if you are working from their amps. It would be weird to have a cabsim go thru ur cab.

I’ve done it, it works. On my amp, at least, you can move the cabsim anywhere in the chain. Before or after any of the outputs, all of them. Like, I can put the cabsim after the amp’s output to the speaker but before the Direct Out to send to FoH or a recording desk/interface. So my speaker gets an unaffected output from the amp while the Direct Out XLR gets the IR flavor.

I imagine any Darkglass product that uses the Suite software can do the same, depending on their physical outputs, but I don’t know for sure as I don’t own anything else.

For now I’m just going to experiment with the Factory IRs and the IRs I already own from Ugritone (once Darkglass upgrades Suite for Windows to 4.3 :unamused: )

Me: I’ll just see what Guitar Center has in beginner-priced cajons. Ooh, I like that one, or that one, sounds pretty good online, too. I’ll go cancel my Amazon delivery.

Amazon, as if reading my mind: lol no. Now it’s out for delivery LOL! Will it actually show up? Will you have to wait until 10pm when people are sleeping and you can’t play it anyway? Who knows!

Welp #FirstWorldProblems. Back to bass lessons.

I bought one on Amazon that had rave rave rave reviews.
I don’t think its all that.
It does hold a nice tray on top nicely for my record cleaning stuff though.

I had a Roland EC10 El Cajon, it’s a great piece but definitely not for me. I banged up my hands pretty good playing, lol.

They had a cheapish one from LP that is black with a green faceplate, matching The Beast and my Ibanez S1.

But now the one I got, that looks like an old crate, is just 4 stops away

On videos it seems there is a lot of difference in cajons in how the “bass” and “snare” sound.

I kinda want the Luna “Henna Dragon” one to stain a dark grey… its snare was very sharp, though, but unlike most in its price range you can disable the snares which is cool.

But these things are wood with bolt on faceplates, it’s pretty easy to make that happen…

loool are you kidding me, Amazon?

4 stops away…
3 stops away…
2 stops away…

…the driver has to make a few more deliveries on the way to your address.

GFY lol

So, I finally picked it up today from the seller. 250 canuckistanian kopecks with a hard case.

Peavey Fury, ca. 1989, maple on maple neck with the newer, narrower profile.

Needs lots of TLC to clean it up, and it smells like hippies.

Yesterday I got a “your package was delivered” at 3:25pm.
It wasn’t.
It did however, show up today at about the same time.

So I’m not sure if I care for the sound of this cajon. I was also wanting one that used snares like from a snare drum, and the description said snares… it uses guitar strings. I mean it sounds snare-like anyway. The gig bag is absolute garbage compared to what the Luna one looks like. It’s basically a cheap-as-possible nylon duffel bag with utterly thin straps that cause pain just looking at them XD The hole is not centered, the logo feces plate for the company is not centered, the thin foam seat pad is not centered…

I might try to just build one. It’s a box with a hole in it, and a thinner plate on the front. The DIY videos look super easy.

It’s amusing to play, at least. I don’t really have drummer aspirations, though.
