GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 1)

Mine was too!

Definitely the Relentless I love it. Great cover design and satisfying tone.

I have had that too.

I also have had your package delivered, with a photo of the door it was delivered to, and it was not mine, it was upstairs from me. The dumb ass walked up stairs he didn’t need to.

That black matte finish they put on it and the Stingray copies is just wicked cool.

Well I have a HB PB-20 and a Dimarzio Relentless pickup on order, back to my Charvel

I noticed that if I can manage to twist the snare knob forward I get a much nicer “snare” sound but it then invades the kick sound more. And the knob doesn’t want to keep the snares that far forward.

I should mess with the screws but apparently the amount of “slap” this thing needs to send off the snare makes it heard across the house :joy:

I think this guy would be proud:

Edit According to this one YouTuber, the string cajons are the adjustable ones, the ones with snares are “take it how it is” well fook :unamused:

Edit 2 Well, I did manage to get a little more snare out of it… so there. Just not with the front screws XD The allen wrench is for adjusting the lever inside. Sort of.

Can’t wait to hear how you like it!

I am looking forward to this. Also ordered a 500k push pull pot to switch between series and parallel

Hey @Wombat-metal,

Just curious why you chose 500 over 250 pots?

Saw a video with an upgrade to this pickup and I liked the sound. It’s fairly hot puckup and would like a crisp sound out of it. Pots are cheap, so can swap it easily if it’s too bright, which I doubt it will be.

Thanks for the info. I have read up about it but never saw any hard & fast rules. Always good to get others take on the endless run on tone tools.

I just got a couple of new toys and have been contemplating what mods I could play with to vary their function.

the tone pot is still 250k, so not going all in. The pot is like $10. If I don’t like it, change it, no loss

Probably not as big a deal for bass as guitar, but if it’s wired similar to a guitar, you’ll get less high-end loss if you make both 500k; the higher the resistance, the less signal it will send to ground.

@terb would be a really good person to ask about this.

I found some 5/8" 27 thread to 1/4" 20 thread adapters. I just gained a bunch of mic stands for $10 in adapters lol…

That’s how I understand it

The wiring diagram that DiMarzio provides shows a 250k tone pot, a .33 microfarrad capaciter, and a 500k volume pot, so this looks to be what’s recommended.

Cool. What kind of pot did you go for? Linear or audio taper?

The specs say custom taper, so I assume that’s the same as audio taper. The cost is the same as Stewmac so I just ordered all the parts from Dimarzio while I was at it

Yeah it specifies audio (i.e. log) taper in the description

We just talked about the cajon in my production class on drums & percussion. These two videos were in our lessons. Interesting seeing the techniques used to get the various sounds.

that’s kinda the problem I’m having now, it’s hard to know if it’s technique or construction. It’s hard to get a “snare” sound I really like. I actually adjusted the Luna one I have atm to get a nicer “snare” but then the knob to turn the snare off is so tight I can’t turn it :joy:

The joys of trial and error when something comes with absolutely no instructions and there are none on their website, nor YouTube videos for it…
