GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 1)

really ? I don’t know what’s my position with Fender CS pickups. I don’t like the “common” ones like the Texas Special (guitar). very … common. but some are excellents … I like the Strat 60’s a lot. and I just bought a Tele 51 set because I absolutly love it. those guys at Fender CS can produce very good stuff, as well as very common stuff, in my opinion. Let your ear judge !

Fender pickups are weird to me.
hit and miss for sure.
My custom shop bass P pickup is fine, but not stellar (shhh….I actually like the one that came in the MIM P better).
@Al1885 doesn’t like the ‘74? Jazz pickups, cautioned me to stay away.

So like everything a mixed bag and personal preference.

I listened to a lot of the CS ‘60s P pickup when I was deciding what I wanted, and I was pretty surprised. For a vintage sounding P it was actually quite good. Up there with Fralin, though a bit below Bareknuckle, and cheaper than either.

I did not want a very vintage P and am much happier with the Dimarzio I got than I would be with the CS ‘60s, but it did sound pretty good.

I listened hard to Bareknuckle. They were OK, in their own way, but not what I wanted to hear in a P pickup. It all depends on what a player is looking for from a pickup.

I’ve got the Dimarzio in my Charvel, so I am going for a more vintage vibe. So Fender, Fralin, Dimarzio 60s possibly

Speaking of my Squier P, one of the buttons keeps loosening up. Shim the screw wih a toothpick, yes?

My willpower is strong, my won”t power not so much :grinning:

Fill the hole with at least one toothpick, but don’t hesitate to fill it with as many as it takes to fill the hole. I do the same, along with a good squirt of wood glue. Wipe off excess glue with a damp rag and let the surface dry. The result is a composite hole fill that’ll hold any screw tightly and securely.

Gassing hard on the new Boss stuff. This Boss Dual Cube Bass LX looks like the ultimate portable practice amp. They got a guitar version too. Think it’s finally time to say goodbye to my Blackstar Fly3.

It’s packed with features:

Looks nice and sounds good on paper! Wonder how good the sound will be with 2 x 5" speakers!

Probably not bad. 2x5” is slightly more speaker area than a single 7”, which is close to a lot of starter amps.

Just watch this short video. I learned all my stuff from Phil.

Pick guard or strap button same method.

Maybe their take on the Phil Jones?
My experience with anything under 10” speaker has been subpar, but I’ve never tried a double 5”. It would be nice if it sounds good.
I need to make room and turn my practice space into a work area/practice space combo so the Markbass CMD JB 1 x 15 is for sale and I’m looking for a smaller option.

Roland has been making CUBE amps since 1978. Phil Jones started in 2002.

The Cube series has always been very popular and this seems like a worthy update. Most portable/mini amps on the market are getting good reviews: Nux Mighty Bass, Phil Jones X4, Spark Mini, etc. Just don’t except them to be huge at performance.

Yea but isn’t that for guitar? When did the first Bass cube get introduced? If I’m not mistaken, this is their first 2x5 Bass offering.

Picked up this thing, as I saw it 2nd hand at a good price. This instead of a second Bass (a Thunderbird) the I ultimately didn’t need.

Although I don’t need this either, but it has been interesting to play around with it and the Neuro App over the last few days.

But I may eventually sell it on again as I’m not sure I have a genuine use for it…

@Terb @Barney did you own one? I’m not sure.

Yes I recently bought a used one from Japan. It came out in 2008, I don’t know when they discontinued it. Roland / Boss are the same company so it’s effectively a reissue.
My amp has most of the features (amp sims, effects, drum machine) as the new one. Runs on AC or 6 AA batteries.

I use it for jamming on my back deck.

Oh the Phil Jones 120 is a 2x5 and sounds awesome, B string and all. Its an engineering marvel for sure.

I love mine and use it often. I also got a MIDI footswitch which allows you to toggle through 128 presets vs. the 6 you can access out of the gate.

It is worth spending a day learning this thing and at least going through the presets online that folks have made and playing around.

The ‘advanced degree’ woudl be learning how to really program it yourself (I have not gotten this far yet, but its on the list for a rainy/snowy weekend.

Hey yeah its a lot of fun. I connected it up to my computer and downloaded a load of presets. Then I got an adapter for my phone so that I can quickly access the presets in the library, which is a lot quicker and easier than using the little toggle switch to use the first 6. One of my kids has a Korg Synthesiser so I kind of already have a basic understanding of the editor, but I’m just kind of unsure in what context I’d use those settings for.

What midi controller did you get?

If you don’t mind me asking how do you generally use it, and what presets do you find the handiest in real world settings? Theres definitely a few fuzzy settings that could be handy for doing Muse covers!

Thanks!
