My head hurts, lol. I’d love to spend a few months connecting all of them though.
More is better!
Given up on Warwick, cause I found what I’ve been looking for. It was quite a search. But didn’t wanna pull the trigger before I had feel for it, and yesterday I tried my mentors BB615, and I was honestly shocked how light and easy to play it was. This one is even lighter at 4.1kg. Only thing I’d wish if it was a pearl white color, but I’m lucky I found even this one.
Rare af.
So I think I found a gold. Yamaha BBG5S '94. Coming from Japan of course, just like my Stingray.
Amazing sound, I wondered why it is so different from anything I heard so far.
These “humbuckers” are actually active split coils like Precision bass ones packed in soapbarish package. And also 2 band preamp.
@howard Pulled the trigger man, thanks for help.
Awesome. What a cool BB.
Soapbars are very versatile with pickup configurations. Underappreciated
Depends on the type of soapbar (a lot) but these sound really good, yeah.
This sounds totally different than standard soapbar.
I dunno what magic Yamaha was doing.
Yeah there’s a lot of soapbars that are just single coil. “Soapbar” isn’t really a pickup type, more of a pickup shape.
All in all, I have never heard a bad Yamaha pickup. The pickups in all my Yamahas, even the lower end ones like my Pacifica 112, have been great. The pickups in my SBV are probably the best ones I have owned, they are at least as good as my DiMarzio Model P.
The closest was the J pickup in my BB734A, but it was good too. I just don’t like J’s so much in comparison to P’s or humbuckers.
Yeah I mean soapbars are narrow “humbucker” shape, but you never know whats inside.
From real humbuckers like on TRBX’es, singles with phantom coils, or split coils.
And yeah, I have never so far heard Yamaha of any level that sounded bad.
This reminded me of those old alnico PJ pups on 1024 or 2024, those are sweeeeeeeet.
Edit: Actually only P was alnico, to level the output they used ceramic J.
They are totally underrated for pickups. YGD makes awesome stuff.
I consider sacrilege when someone buys Yammy and switches pups. None sound like Yamahas.
For example to me TRBX304/5 pups sound better than TRBX505/605.
I love the 304’s pickups. Big ceramic humbuckers.
I did like the 604’s better but not because they were any better quality wise, just because of the voicing. If one wanted a bright, punchy humbucker sound the 304 is solid.
I have one last gasp of gas in the tank, not sure when I will pull the trigger
Mild mannered jazz pickups. But these are the Nordstrand 51J4S, which is the 51P4S, split coil P in a single coil form, but in this case in a Jazz housing. I can get a double P jazz.
Thinking about converting my Paranormal
I saw an Italian luthier who made a Jazz bass using two single coil 50s P pickups. This is just a better solution
GAS Attack… Don’t ask me for a reason that really justifies it other than GAS but it’s the look I like and it’s not reliced. It is real wear. My favorite color and type of bass. USD$250. Should I stay or should I go? It’s an 90’s Squier… from the few existing ones that have a Squier with an by Fender decal. Love the rosewood neck… Made in Indonesia. Weird thing is though that there’s no info on PN serial numbers from Indonesia. One thread says it’s legit but other than that… no info.
There is no time like the present!
Wow. Finally a J I might like
I’d buy that twice for that price!
It’s a looker too.
I really like the look and the price sounds really reasonable. There’s very little info on that serial number. Those PN serials are legit according to a forum but don’t appear in regular listings.
Omg! It has been an unexpected month and will continue to be unexpected. I just picked up 2 Warwick $$ last week and today both my built order just checked in. It looks like both are a couple of weeks away from finish. Both orders has been in the work for over 6 months. Lignum actually over a year.
First is a short multi scale bass from Lignum with half a page long of build parameters
And the second bass is a Rickie inspired bass P/JJ. The BassBuzz Bass.
Enjoy!
