Yeah it’s fabulous but like @howard said it’s the Ampeg sound. Which I love but while it’s not exactly a one trick pony but it is definitely a certain sound.
I like it because there’s no menu diving. I plug in and play and through my Rumble it’s the sound I hear in my head.
The built in compressor wasn’t great but I fixed that.
I checked these out about a year ago.
I liked the sound and the format but there were a few negatives for me (I had to go back and check my notes… getting old sucks!)
On the Micro VR the cooling fan was very audible at bedroom practice levels. That’s not a problem when you wind the volume up, but I think it’s really meant for small venues rather than home use.
Also, the Aux input only goes to the headphone rather than through the speakers which is not ideal for practice jamming to a backing track. Again, maybe more intended for a gig situation with a click track.
The Micro-CL (100W) on the other hand was very quiet in operation and the Aux input could be blended with the bass signal and played through the cab so great for jamming with a backing track. This would be my choice for home use.
Soooooo - I intentionally kept myself away from GAS (and this topic of course) for a while but… GAS is a real syndrome, y’all should be aware
So I decided to sell whatever I “don’t need” of my gear (to free up some room under my desk and to provide reason for further purchases obviously ) including the Squier Sonic P (W/ upgraded pickup and pickguard), my custom 15" cabinet, my TC 250W amp. Finally I am still struggling with selling the BC208 cabinet but as soon as it’s gone - I’ll go for the 2x12 path I believe. In September I went to a guitar/bass show in Hungary and from all equipment one stood out with sound and power (basically heard over all other booth performance, even the FOH ) and that was the local made Prolude KO cabinets (and amps). So I contacted the manufacturer (well, the guy ) and tested the 210 and the 212 and fell in love with the 212:
I’ll get a 4 Ohm 212 as shown above (as soon as getting rid of the BC208)
I have a Yamaha BBT500h which can run at 2Ohms if needed so can drive both cabinets at 2.66 Ohms. Plan B (if sticking to bass amp, please continue reading ) is upgrading amp to 750W @2.66Ohm with this bass amp called Little Brick from the same guy.
I really love the sound of the NUX Melvin Lee preamp via headphones.
So now why this long prologue? I think about going very (very!) clean on the amp to replicate what I hear through headphones from the NUX, and best way probably via a power amp (instead of bass amp). And would be nice if someone provided any real experience on why to go for it or why not to? ART SLA2 was one proposal (at FB); others at TalkBass (I think) love GSS Baby Sumo… So is there anything against a pure power amp (once I have the preamp and the cabinet)? All advice is welcome/appreciated
I have a Bergantino amp, it is extremely clean.
Extremely. This was my requirement too.
I have also heard good things about Thomman’s class D amp (bass amp) that uses the same power block.
I ignore the preamp in the Berg, and shape with other things. I’d imagine you can do the same thing cheaper with the Thomman.
The Ampeg SGT-DI is the only GAS object on my list, even if I purchased Amplitube that works really well. I’d like to be able to not depend on the computer and have SVT or B15 tone other than through small sound monitors. It is finally available in Mexico through Amazon for $500 Dollars but I can’t afford that now. Heck, I would even consider exchanging one of my basses for one.
Thanks everyone for your input on this. The Venture series looks good but it might be a bit more than my budget. I’ll have to convince myself to raise the debt ceiling (if Congress can do it, why not me?) and shoot for the Venture V3 (anything more might break a few windows). What changed my mind was the fan noise on the SVT Micro. That constant noise will eventually get to me.
Thank you @joergkutter , @cheeze_pizza , @John_E , @howard , @Paul_9207 , @Paul , @Barney , @eric.kiser , @HowlinDawg .
Merry Christmas everyone!
I don’t reccomend either the SLA2 or the Baby Sumo. Not because of anything wrong with them, it’s just not economical to go the stand alone power supply. Like @John_E said, the Toman bass amp uses the exact same power module as almost every other class D bass amp on the market. Fender, Mesa, Ampeg, Hartke, etc., all use the same one. I think Peavey is the only one that built their own.
Other than that if you found an amp and cabinet you really like, then that’s the one for you.
Replica basses are cool but always a crap shoot because you never really know what you’re getting or how much work you’ll have to put into it to make it a player and not a wallhanger.
Here’s me on a replica Vox Phantom IV. It plays great, looks great and people always ask about it. Dead Beat Jacks 2021-G.pdf (3.8 MB)
Yeah, I’ve checked Thomann’s Block-800B and it appears to be very flat, reading thru reviews as “Sound: there is none, well Kinda. You provide the sound, hehe. This head gets out of the way and delivers sheer power. You will want a pedal preamp in line to shape your tone” and “The sound of the amp alone is really quite neutral which I see as a good thing given the choice of pre-amps available now days"” - also pretty decent pricing.
(Only that it would not go below 4 Ohms according to description and then I need to - in the future of course - stick to either the 212 or the 112.)
Thanks for the hint! Awesome company we have here (nothing new obv)
I’ve found that to be true too. This is the inside of the block 800. Easy enough to feed the effects return with a preamp or whatever tone shaping thing.
Well wait Now we have to discuss what the difference would be using the input vs the return? It’s eliminating the built-in preamp? I thought that’s why we’d go for the given amp as it’s fairly flat, right?
If preamp into Fx return works and makes any bass amp into a simple power amp (as using the power amp section only) then it doesn’t matter what amp I get assuming having an Fx loop option, sufficient power and lowest price, does it? Makes sense tho but want to clarify this stuff before any action taken
