E → D → C → B = perfect fourth
Like I said, not my strongpoint. Trying to learn. Old dog syndrome sometimes.
I found the notation section in b2b much harder than Billie Jean
Notation is not my love(r )
So in terms of wanting to get back into playing chords, GAS’ing on a baritone might be a better waste of excess cash? A ways down the line. I need to get to some level of competence with my bass playing before I even consider touching another 6 string. I’m refusing to restring and set up my current LP because I’d play it.
I looked up the serial number and it looks like this was made in September '94. Going on 30 years old and still seems to work perfectly! Can a beat up boss pedal that there are a crap ton of out there be vintage?
On my last extended trip, I did not take any recording gear with me. I decided on my next extended trip (next week) to bring something along for recording snippets for practicing purposes. I found this M-AUDIO M-Track Solo DAI for $49.00 on Amazon so I ordered it. Showed up this morning and actually I’m a bit impressed. It seems well made, included USB cable, and some free software that I haven’t downloaded yet. After I play with a while, I’ll add to this initial review.
If anyone has experience with this, please let me know.
Looks like I’m getting into a bit of GAS. For various reasons I feel the need to treat myself with a better bass than the one I’ve got; an Ibanez Mezzo which is great for the price of £300. However having tried a few more expensive ones in the shops I’m now fancying something at around £1000-£1400. I tried a couple of Fenders, a Sandberg and a couple of others but none of them really grabbed me. Mostly I liked their sound (better than my cheapy) but not their feel; too heavy, neck too fat/flat, neck dive etc… However I did find that I didn’t really notice the shift out from 32" scale to 34". So I figure I’m going to get a 34" this time but then my dilemma starts. There are two basses that I fancy and I’ve heard very positive reviews on both and loved the sound I’ve heard in those reviews (though of course the reviewers are inevitably way better players than me). The problem is that I haven’t found either bass stocked in a shop within a reasonable distance from my home. So I figure I’ll have to buy both and then return one (hopefully just one). Anyway I thought I’d solicit some opinion on here as well.
So one of the ones I am looking at has actually had a quite a bit of discussion on these pages already or at least the 5 string short scale version (@Whying_Dutchman !) and that is the Ibanez EHB1500 which I can pick up for £1319.
And the other I’m looking at is the Schecter Riot-4 which I can pick up for £1199.
Would be grateful for any relevant observations from the many gear experts on BassBuzz!
I have none with that DAI but in general M-Audio gear is fine. Inexpensive yet functional.
Those both look fantastic to me. That Schecter ticks a lot of boxes actually.
The pickups on both are outstanding. The Schecter has EMG’s that look great and the Ibanez has custom Nordstrands.
I think you’ll be happy with either. I have a soft spot for higher end Ibanez myself.
Thanks Howard.
I have an EHB1500, but I have it in Dragon Eye finish.
The 1500 is everything the EHB1005SMS is, and more! Because it has a pair of Nordstrand Big Break Split Coil Pickups. Dual splits! It has an amazing tone!
None of the darkness/mud that the 1005 has
Except the Neutrik locking jack, all the flaws of the 1005 have been addressed. The pickups are clear and punchy, the side dots and inlays are easily visible, only the jack remains and you get used to that quickly.
It’s light, ergonomic, has one of the best preamps I have played, 3 way with a mid sweep. It’s a pleasure to play. The pickups are the star though.
The bridge and tuning is different at the start but super precise and holds tune forever.
One thing I mention is a plus for me, may not be for you, which is the neck. It is not a typical Ibanez fast neck. It is not 38mm at the nut, it is 41mm. It is more like an ESP/Schecter fast neck than Ibanez.
There’s a lot of little things on this bass that make it nice - stainless steel fret wires, strap locks, graphite rods in the neck, stuff like that.
Fabulous bass. two thumbs up! When I cull basses again this one’s a keeper
@howard and @Wombat-metal damn, one vote for each!
I have to say that purely on aesthetics I think the Riot-4 is the better looking but I’ve always sworn that for a musical instrument the sound has to be the most important factor. Incidentally I think on the EHB I do prefer the older dragon eye finish to the cosmic blue one.
That 41mm at the neck did worry me a little; I do love the Mezzo 38mm, but my fender acoustic is 43mm at the nut and I’m very comfortable playing that. Actually I suspect I haven’t been playing long enough to really notice the difference that much.
One thing I did notice when I was playing some of the basses in the shop is that some had quite flat fingerboards and I found that, not so much uncomfortable, as just ‘odd’. So my Mezzo and Fender both have 305mm radii, the Riot-4 has 406mm and the EHB1500 has a whopping 500mm. So that may be an issue.
Ultimately I think I’m going to need to buy both and then return one. Which is a drag, I strongly dislike doing that.
They both look like good basses, I’m sure you’ll make a good choice; you really can’t go wrong.
More GAS! The OG Cali 76 Bass Compressor in a new format 🫨
i mean i’m happy with my DG compressor. but if this had existed when i got it, i would have bought it.
Fortunately I have outsourced all of my compressor thinking to my Adam pedal. The signal goes into the green box and comes out sounding good and I don’t question (much).
sure, pretty sure that uses the DG standard compressor (symmetry) that they used to offer standalone. nothing wrong with that one at all.
