GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

In old school punk the only requirement for a bass is that it makes noise :joy:

There might be one good reason for the HB: for (almost) the price difference to the Ashdown you can get great EMG pickups to make that bass sound even better. And it will be hum-free…

not very tech minded so thats lost on me a little, would EMG pickups be a good upgrade on either of these basses?

minds made up btw as i looked on the thomann website again and it says its not available for a few months. so i’ll pull the trigger on the ashdown later today i think.
and im quite prepared to mod the ashdown too at a later date if the pickups would improve it. like i said im not very tech minded, so would EMG replace P pickups say? and make it sound better?

thanks

Yeah, if you were disappointed in a suggestion of the HB, I think you’ve probably made up your mind.

I don’t know the Ashdown, but for the HB it was a significant upgrade. It is very likely that any cheap bass will sound better with an EMG pickup (even more expensive ones, but that really is a matter of taste and “religion”).

I went with the passive EMG GZR first and than went for the active PJX. The active PJ sounds a little warmer. All of them are great!

Advantage of EMG: it’s a no soldering system and completely noise free.

But: if you like the tone of the Ashdown, ignore everything I said. Or invest in proper strings…

I like Thomastik Jazz Flats: easy to play, sounds great … but it might not fit your genre…
(Note: I don’t like Jazz and I do play punk with them too :-))

Saw some very nice basses today. I’ve never played a Markbass bass before, it’s sounds pretty good.

Freaking gas.

I realized I didn’t have a singlecut either, so…

After trading for an Ibanez fretless recently, I discovered that I absolutely love playing fretless. I have a lot of work to do so that I can consistently nail my intonation, but oddly enough I’m really looking forward to putting in that work.

Having decided that I do indeed really like fretless, I started looking around for a nicer one, as one does. Ultimately I decided I wasn’t quite ready to pluck down Fodera / Mayones level dough.

Then out of nowhere, while doing some searches the Sire F10 pops up. I was going to buy a fretted one months back, but couldn’t find one in stock anywhere. I didn’t even know that there was a fretless version of this model, but apparently there is. And it was in stock. And new, going for $200 under the list price. With a very nice OHSC. It’s coming from the east coast where I am, so expect it should be here pretty soon. Very excited about this one!

Got this Wilkins home today and cleaned and oiled down. It’s by far the best bass I’ve ever owned, there are many many out there much better but this one is mine lol. I emailed Pat today and he sent me back the build sheet. I’m over the moon on this one but this is MY LAST ONE, I swear!!

As a big Jaguar fan, I’m pretty sure that’s a Meteora.
