I have them & hate them! They sound so very “metallic”…
The Joe Dart strings are not the Cobalts. I went through a phase where I liked the cobalts as it gave a lot of high end that worked well with effects while maintaining an almost smooth feel. The strings used on the Dart models are quite a bit more mellow.
If you want to discuss flat vs round you can revise this thread
Flat wound vs round wound strings
According to the Sterling site, the JD3 uses 2801 flats, not the 2805 JD flats. the 2801s are pretty nice
They look the same but for length but that could be wrong
*just confirmed the 2801 are the short scale versions of the 2805. I like my 2801s
I bought one a couple of months ago. It’s a really neat little bit of kit, and the app that now goes with it feels really well designed and easy to use.
I don’t have any experience with other pedals to compare it against, but for me it’s got a good range of tones and effects to play with. Bizarrely (?) I get best results by connecting the pedal to the input of my Rumble 100, rather than using the FX loop I/O. I have to roll the Hi-Mid & Treble down a bit, to cut some occasional high frequency hiss (still not sure if this is setup related
).
Overall I’m really quite happy with it, and it’s a nice bit of kit that I think provides what is probably a gentle introduction to the world of modelling and effects.
Phil
nice, you got one?
note - if you plan on playing any Morphine, you will need to change strings as they did not set the tuning for those songs (which makes no damn sense to me) LMK if you want info on how, finding strings that don’t break for the proper tunings is very tricky - and I imagine why they did not bother to do so (althorugh they stated otherwise on the website, which is an excuse IMO)
Yeah I did get one. I put a down payment on one some time ago during a sale, and they were supposed to ship in Feb, but it’s here now. But nothing goes into “show us your bass” until it’s in hand. Fate would have too much fun with that.
I was wondering about strings. I was rereading that this afternoon just after checkout, and they said “just tune the D string up to G” and I thought that’s a recipe for disaster.
I will probably change the tuning but will start out being a poser and playing on the EA. I want to see what it’s like, and get a feel first. It’s kinda minimalist, and I like that. I may try going back to plucking with my one good finger
Though I will take you up on that at some point. Now to find a strap.
Wondering if Fralin or Novak would make a custom pickup.
So do some research. This bass is played with a pick and a slide. The action should be super high so no strings ever touch a fret. The proper Morphine tunings are C-G or D-A but in the opposite direction you are used to. They are in fifths (vs fourths), working away from you. This gives you a power chord at every fret, which with the slide is basically fretless. I use a glass slide.
I honestly don’t know what you would do with this bass not tuned for Morphine songs and set up for slide like this.
mark Sandman used to burn through strings like crazy as they were tuned so wonky.
i ended up with different brand strings for each one so they didn’t snap I can look when I’m home again to let you know what
Yeah, I think D A is the way to go
Depends on the tune, and D-A breaks more strings, lol
I have tabs for a ton of Morphine tunes if you want them, shoot me a PM with your email.
Well me too but since shipping doubles the price…. I had to let it go ![]()
Well, since had my little debate the Aerodyne was sold, and at one of the big online stores I like/prefer (Muziker) there was this Sire P5R-5 in tobacco sunburst with the proper retro tortoise pickguard for basically half price as have been a demo sample in the store. But set up and 24 months warranty with option to send back by 31st January with no questions asked…. Too nice to skip, so started to watch reviews (e.g. Lobster done some nice ones on the exact type) and getting familiar with concept of having a 5 string again (tried twice already since my nearly-3-year-old-journey with no real success until now?
).
Outcome? Obviously couldn’t resist and Yamaha and/or Aerodyne needs to wait ![]()
Congrats. That’s a great bass. Even if it sports one too many strings. ![]()
It’s a comfort string.
That’s a very sweet looking bass, congratulations
Congrats! These are great basses.
I have some upgrades planned for my BB234. I have most everything picked out except the pickups. I’m mostly torn between the DiMarzio Model P/J and the new Duff McKagen set (I know you can already get each piece separately but I do kinda like the decal on the Duff set). I play a bit of everything, my band mostly plays classic rock covers but I like to play some punk/pop punk on my own if that helps
As a follow up to this. I mentioned it to the wife the other day. When I told her the $1600 price tag, her reaction was “holy shit! Well, you make money.”
Then my car had issues (both rear brake lines need replacing) so the bass has to wait until after the $2K in car repair is dealt with. Yes, I could afford both without much issue but I can’t justify both at the same time to myself.
I did find a used one on Sweetwater’s Gear Exchange for only 1000. It has a small ding in the back on the edge which I could live with, and it comes with a hard case. That may end up being the way I go if it is still there in a couple weeks after I have dealt with the car.
I’d say you should plan a trip down to the shop to try it out, but for me, I found that I like those higher radii. That’s gonna be one of those personal things that none of us here are going to be able to advise on though. You really need to just try one out. As for the cost… if you’ve got the cash money and it isn’t gonna cause any bills to go unpaid or anyone to eat ramen till payday, I say do it. It’s just money and you’re gonna kick yourself for not just buying that bass.
