GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

I really like my Dingwall - it’s lovely to play, and I think it look superb.

The thing with stuff made in China is that there is a perception that China = cheap. For some things, this is evidently true - for example, supermarket jeans for £10 / €10 / $10…

But the iPhone I’m typing on was made in China and certainly wasn’t cheap… my über-aero carbon road bike wasn’t cheap, despite the frame, forks, wheels, handlebars, saddle etc. all being made in China.

Likewise, the Dingwall…

I believe you and it sounds awesome on your covers. Certainly an excellent instrument. What is the model exactly ?

Yeah, that’s for sure. Also if Dingwall let some instruments to be made in China, is obviously for cost reason (“cheap”). But it doesn’t mean it’s poorly made. Chinese people are not less capable than other human being, obviously.

China has the best overall mass manufacturing in the world. Full stop. Western corporate greed made sure of that.

This is an FYI:
If you want to use an American Express Gift Card, it may not work at Sweetwater. I tried to use an AMEX gift card over the weekend and it was declined because Sweetwater doesn’t require a certain security code that AMEX needs to process your order. I found the same gear on Amazon and the same gift card worked just fine.
I hope this helps.

How does this bass sound? I was looking at it the other day because I want a cherry red one without the fender cost.

It sounds pretty good, and the neck is much nicer than the Squire. Only thing I might change is the pickup. For the money it’s a good deal.

How’s the left hand playing going for you? Hope it’s working out.

It’s going slow. I’ve had some occupational therapy, and doing some weights so my wrist is a lot more functional again, so I can play right handed again, which is nice, but my occupational therapist also thinks it’s good exercise for dexterity to keep playing lefty so I need to work that into my routine.

I’m hoping for a review of that compressor pedal after you get some use in. I’m quite intrigued by it.

Will do.

There are quite a few fans on this forum. I like mine. Easy to understand controls. Sounds good. I’ve been playing with the dry mix control recently and am happy with the results.

Hi! I’m GASing after a bass but would really like your expert opinion on it. This 1984 P-Bass MIJ is up for sale for $700 USD, case included. It has a lot of wear but everything is supposed to be original. I can’t try it out but I can return it. It seems to have been painted and it caught my attention that the truss rod has to be adjusted from the pickup side but the pickguard does not have the usual “window” to do so. Gear is usually 30% above US prices. That’s the price of a Squier Mustang bass here. BTW, I only have one bass, a Fender Mustang PJ 2017 MIM. Good excuse…
I would really like to hear your thoughts. Would I be better off buying a 2007 Standard for the same price? Thanks in advance!

It’s not very expensive for a '84 MIJ. In my experience and opinion, MIJ’s are in general somewhere in between MIM and MIA Fender’s, quality wise. It’s probably a bit better than a Player (even if there is nothing wrong with Player’s).

I’d definitely take this over the player series. Vintage tuner and the hootenanny button. It might be a reverse tuner so heads up.

If it’s an 84 it’s a better build than the Femder USA counterparts. That’s the era when fender took a look at the Mij craftsmanship and went back to school relearning how to build guitars again.

If the truss rod is working and the neck is not twisted, it’s a steal at $700

You can get a new MIJ for that but still that one will be a quality bass, made for Fender by Fujigen

Thank you @terb! I really like the look of it. I don’t gig, I don’t see it as an investment. I’d be happy with one bass that I really like and a Fender P-bass has been my dream even over the Mustang I really like.
