GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

Damn, I guess I should have bought one to speculate with.

Has this ever been resolved??? The suspense has been killing me… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

No, it has not - nor have I received any indication of it shipping or when it will ship.
Might not be in the cards for a second time…

Would love some advise. I got a local made p-bass to start me out but I’ve been window shopping since I started in the €800 range for something pretty with a bit of range.

Liking the schecter stuff and the local has a Schecter C-4 Plus - See Through Cherry Burst - promusica.ie but I was eyeing a Schecter Diamond Stiletto Extreme 4 BCH – Thomann Ireland

I’m in Ireland so most of the good things are risks that you don’t get to lay hands on till it fails you so wondering if anyone has any experience or recommendations. With the C4 I can at least guarantee the setup will be solid and I can play it.

Would I be silly to try and trade my Sterling Stingray SUB 5 for a 4 string? I’m realizing now that the strings of the 5 are much closer together and while I like having the low B I also probably don’t need it. Just wondering if it would be better to try and sell it and buy a sub 4 or try and trade it. I doubt I’ll have much luck getting a music store to go along with it but there are a few 4s for sale locally that maybe I can trade for.

Not at all, I dislike 5’s for the same reason and did exactly the trade you are considering (except with Warwicks).

5’s aren’t harder, they just add less than you expect, weigh more, cost more, and feel (to me) worse. YMMV.

I mean 5’s seem to sell for a bit more. I picked mine up for $215 and while it has some small scratches on the back and a few minor dings on the neck it’s in great shape. I was trying to trade it and my ibanez gio with upgrades for a Ray 24CA which I think is super pretty but a standard Ray and keeping my Ibanez is probably the better choice.

If you’ve got a Music Go Round nearby, I’d totally take it in and see if they’d be willing to do a 1 for 1.

I know the Georges near by doesn’t do trades. I can’t seem to get either seller to respond to me on Reverb. I’m thinking of calling in about the 24CA they are pretty local. @howard Do you think the 24CA is worth it over a standard sub 4?

Agree, I’d ask Al, I’ve never owned any MM.

The 24CA is still technically a SUB but it has a mahogany body and some other minor ā€œclassicā€ features. I think you can also easily re-wire the pickup in parallel. From what I was reading though they are basically a pretty Sub 4

They are so similar you are unlikely to notice a difference. Get the one you like the look of the best. That neck on the C-4 is beatiful.

It’s so pretty I’m cyber stalking this guy right now to see if he’ll do a trade

It really depends. I love slab body on a few basses like my classic and USA SUB but and thats a big but, Sterling 24 Classic active is not the same as Ray 34CA. Ray 34CA is a Bonafide classic stingray.

Speaking of the string spacing, the Sub 5 is not much narrower than the sub 4 which is only 38mm at the nut. I’d look for the older SB14. That’s gem right there, very very close to the EBMM Sterling model.

At $500+ retail the Ray 24CA is the most overpriced of the lineup. It has the same pickups as the SUB 4 it seems. Not my favorite by far. 2-3 came by and I let them go as quickly as I could.

If you want a good stingray experience I highly suggest OLP. Full width and really awesome. I have a couple of them on hand for my special projects. Or SB4 but nobody really know what they are. They are about $200 and ready to mod.

Do you think a 24CA at a $350 price point is worth checking out?

Aside from the $525 retail price, what do you like about the 24CA? That’s the important question.

The looks mostly but the neck is supposed to be nicer, I like the idea of hardwood instead of basswood and it sounds like it’s easy to switch to wiring the pickup in parallel if you want.

Aside from the volume level I wouldn’t worry about parallel wiring as matching the tone is just a few turn on the knobs.

As for the neck, I didn’t notice any difference between that and the SUB 4. I really suggest that you hunt for the Ray34. The older model has matching headstock and killer pickup as well as correct Stingray vibe. The newer one has roasted maple neck. It’s on the used market as low as $400. At least 3 times I took advantage of the confusing model name and score the Ray34 for less than $300.

If you like the slimmer neck profile as well as body then consider looking for the SB4 or SB14. I own several EBMM Sterling fretted and fretless and I just love them.

Oh cool. Yea I’ve been seeing that roasted neck here and there. Thanks for your expert advice!
