GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

Bass bucket list #57 - Jamming on bass in a Jeffries tube with Captain Picard

By Picard, I was referring to the recent three series of Picard - fantastic TV. I am also rather hoping the rumours of Seven as a captain are true.

I had FGN it’s exactly the same as Fender Japan, as the matter of fact, aren’t they the same company once?

Sort of. Fender Japan has many if not most of it’s instruments built by FGN and Tokai under the Fender name, which manufacturer did the most is year dependent. But the reputation for Fender MIJ was largely FGN branded as Fender

ā€œMade in Japanā€ = made by Fujigen for Fender
ā€œCrafted in Japanā€ = made by Tokai or Dyna Gakki for Fender

Pretty sure the current ones are Fujigen (due to similarities) but I could be wrong.

Oh and you Trekkies are all wrong. Star Wars all the way - but only if you count the Old Republic stuff.

From the Web

  • Early '80s MIJ and Squier guitars Made in Japan are awesome and collectors items.

  • Early '90s MIJ was made by FujiGen, and CIJ was made by Dyna. The build quality is considered to be comparable.

  • Late '90s to early 2000 CIJ Fenders were made by Tokai, and are considered to be a higher standard of guitar.

  • Anything after 2007 can either have MIJ or CIJ label, and it doesn’t mean squat.

That’s simply because in 2007 Fender ended their contract with Dyna. Right now, no one knows for sure who makes them. Some say Fender built their own factory but that seems unlikely to me.

The reason I think they are Fujigen is because they look and feel like Fujigens, feature-wise. At least my Hybrid II’s did - similar improvements, neck feel, etc over the classic designs as Fujigen shipped in their own models. I have seen someone else claim they were Dyna Gakki models.

Pretty sure after 2007 they use FGN to manufacture, but they can be CIJ or MIJ and it’s pretty much interchangeable as far as branding

Could be. Not sure about every year but the current models (since at least 2022) are all MIJ.

I am not familiar with this one! Looks great though. Apparently ā€œHistoryā€ was the store brand of Shimamura Gakki (a chain here). Never tried one myself.

Fujigen made instruments under lots of different brandings so I think it’s likely this is a Fujigen as the seller claims.

I tried a BB434 out at my local Guitar Center and really liked it. Someone please convince me that my Sire V5 and Aerodyne P bass already have my P and J bases covered before I make an impulse buy.

They do. But that might not stop you.

There’s no need to buy any more basses. You don’t want another PJ bass, what’s this 434 got anyway, let’s have a look. Ooh! The baby powder blue one looks great, oh, the red metallic, wow, holy crap the sunburst is so classic.

What 6 bolt with 2 slanted anchor bolts for superb neck stability and angle through body stringing, nah you don’t want one.

You’d prolly need gonna need 2 one for odd days and another for even days. I’m the last person to tslk you out of buying. I just got 3 basses. Last week, :joy:

That’s for damn sure.

I’ve tried a 434, pound for pound I think they’re one the best basses in that price range. I’ve got my heart set on a 734 in matte black, I can’t find one locally to try so the 434 was the closest thing to it. Just shifting a little though, how about a 504 or 604 if you’re looking for something to fill a different niche? They’re running dual humbuckers and quality wise are comparable to the 434.

My first and second wife - they spent my money for me so no bass then

My third wife - I would have had to write a point paper and wait for her to read it and make a decision or life would have been very tough.

My fourth and present wife - I think I’m up to 12 Basses!

On a side note, I’m the one that keeps talking myself out of buying one of those new nifty John Taylor Dingwalls!
