GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

Recently put Elixir rounds on my Warwick. I’m the same way with preferring flats for sensory reasons, but these are probably the best rounds I’ve tried yet. Sound and feel great.

I’ve been playing my TI Jazz Rounds pretty exclusively lately. They’re my absolute faves.

I’ll do an A/B/C compare/contrast test with the SIT Foundations/DR Blues/TI Jazz Rounds and report back.

Yeah, Elixirs are good, and inexpensive. Glad you like them!

@faydout - the normal Elixir nanoweb rounds in .45-100 might be worth a try for you.

SS > Nickel for the brightness, eh?

I just realized it’s only 1.57" at the nut. That’s the same as my Kiloton and I find that I prefer that over the 1.6something on my BB300. I assumed it would be more P bass I guess.

40mm, yep. My favorite size too (my SBV is 40mm too).

Yes but if you do not like the feel of nickel you will really hate SS - it’s less smooth

OK, I just did a back-to-back compare/contrast of my rounds brands.

Between the SIT Foundations and the DR Blues, the Foundations are the smoother feeling. The DR Blues are a lot smoother compared to D’Addario rounds, but slightly less so than the Foundations: SIT Foundations are just damn good strings - USA handmade with a smaller core.

To round things out, so to speak, I also played my TI Jazz Rounds. In short, there is no contest: TIs are by far smoother feeling than any other rounds I’ve ever played. Period. My background is as a lifelong guitar player, and I’ve played tons of different round wound string brands. As far as smoothness of string feel is concerned, TI beats ‘em all, hands down.

That said, if you’re looking to try some inexpensive and still great rounds, I’d suggest you go with SIT Foundations. They offer a whole lot of value.

Thank you so much, I got shipping info on the bass and it’ll be here on Thursday. I can get the SIT’s here in time to toss it on the bench, change them out and get my action and intonation set right away. I’ve already got a few covers ready to record that I’m holding off on till I can do it up right and proper with the BB.

I would still recommend giving the EXLs a shot too before chucking them - They feel much better to me than Ernie Ball or other inexpensive rounds. They are actually my go-to string if I am not buying NYXL’s (my faves, which are essentially just improved EXL’s.)

I’ll try T-I someday but here the price is just not tenable.

I’ve been wanting to try them too, if these work I’ll look at the TI’s next go around. My pressurewounds and flats haven’t needed a changing since I started using them. I don’t want to pay that much right off the bat to see if can find rounds that I like. $20 for a set is easier to stomach in case I hate them still.

I totally get it. But since you’re coming from non-rounds strings, rounds are going to be a different experience and sound, both of which can be very good, at least, hopefully so. :grinning:

In my experience, SIT Foundations are far head and shoulders superior to the usual suspects like EB Slinkies or D’Addario rounds. D’A EXL strings are aggressively abrasive-feeling in comparison to Foundations, again, solely in my experience. YMMV

That said, EB and D’A are ubiquitous and well known because many new basses ship with them installed. Not knocking them or any players who dig them. There are just better strings available for me.

I have two sets of foundations getting motivated to put them on, if only I could decide which bass :joy:

Unless it has the Elixir nanoweb coating over it. I made up my mind to try them because I hated the feel of both of the SS strings I tried. Turns out it was a moot point as all the store had in stock was the nickel-wrapped steel core version. Personally I like the sound a lot (see Pixies cover) and don’t hate the feel. (High praise.)

ETA: I’ll have to give the TI Jazz Rounds a try. The flats are great!

Much also has to do with how you treat your strings after installation. I do 2 things one is the string lube and FingerEase sprays. After a couple applications many strings feels better. That’s the main reason I like fender 45 and the slinkies. The are well made and cheap. If not for the massive volume they sell these strings set would go for at least double the price giving the out of the box quality.

Talking about feel and texture nothing would burn you faster than a smooth flats when you do quick slides unless you use quik glide powder treatment

Right now I’m GASing over some sort of DAI solution. You’ve all seen the cover I posted in that thread by now, and one of my biggest problems on that was levels between the backing track and the sound of my amp both getting picked up by my phone. The levels were good in the room but weren’t great on my phone.

So, it seems like a DAI so I could plug into the laptop and record that way would give me the best options for boosting my bass compared to the track. My amp doesn’t have a line out, so i need something separate.

I keep seeing Scarlett Focusrite mentioned, but I’m also kind of looking at the Fender Mustang Micro Plus, since it also works as a headphone amp. But maybe there’s something better. I see the Zoom B1Four mentioned in a lot of contexts, but i don’t know if that can work as a DAI. I’m a noob to all this, so I have no idea what I need/what is good/what is too much/etc.

Amp/cab sims and modeling all flies over my head. I still haven’t moved the EQ knobs on my amp away from straight up noon (yet).

I grabbed one of these and for the $$ it’s not a bad option

Does that have a built in DAI also? I see it’s got the XLR out, but if it doesn’t have the interface part included than the XLR would go to the DAI, then the computer.

I don’t think the Zoom is a DAI. The Focusrite is a well known one. Most of the lower end ones, which would be any of the interfaces under about $600 aren’t going to be that different from one another as far as being able to record covers. I wouldn’t sweat which one is the right one too much. I’d find one you like and go with that.

Yea true it’s not a dai but with the XLR and headphone… I’ve seen some focustite Scarlett deals on FB marketplace. I have the 2i2 or whatever it’s called. It’s pretty good.

If you are only plan to use it for cover videos using your phone especially iPhone then the consider Roland GoMixer Pro X or better yet JoYo MoMix simply because the Roland has very flimsy micro usb connector vs USB C.

This setup simplify the whole video as well as editing. I use this setup for almost a year or more till I got the Zoom Q8N 4K.

Here’s the thread I posted last year

The B1 Four isn’t, but the (newer) B2 Four and B6 are:

Bit of a different price tag though.
