Hello Everyone!I'm New To the Bass Buzz Community

I hope I’m now posting this in the right place, I kinda get the feeling that I may have posted my first introduction post in the wrong place. Hello, my name is Dennis and I’m new to the Bass Buzz Community, I’ve been a bass player since I was 12 years old, here recently at 60 years old I had a stroke that affected the left side of my body as well as my fretting hand. When I returned home from the hospital one of the first things I did was pick up and try to play my bass again, needless to say, It was a frustrating nightmare. But I took my time and slowed myself down and now my playing has gotten much better , I’ve actually learned new songs completely through note for note, in the beginning though, I felt like I did when I first started as a child in my bedroom. I saw some of Josh’s lessons on youtube and decided to join up here. I figure With hard dedicated work I’ll get through this, I’ve made a lot of progress already. I just wanted to say hello to you all, I’m so glad to be here!

Hey welcome aboard @Bmore_Bass_Player ! I think there’s an official introductions thread you can go and say hi

Sorry to hear about the stroke. But more importantly, it’s good that you’re getting the use of your left hand back! Did the doctor recommend bass playing as therapy? I’m thinking it would be perfect to build strength and coordination in the hand, especially because it may be you non-dominant side…

Anyway for failure to post your introduction in the correct thread, as a self-appointed guardian of the forum, I fine you one cover song - to be recorded and posted in the Post your Covers thread

Hi @Bmore_Bass_Player!

You can repost your introduction over here: Introduce Yourself! (2025)

Welcome aboard! I sometimes brush my teeth left-handed, based on the idea that I might one day need it. At first it was super difficult as a right-handed person, now it’s kinda fun.

Hi Ed Thanks for replying to my post, no, the Doctor didn’t recommend playing bass as therapy but my occupational therapist did suggest that I get back to playing as soon as possible in order to get back as much of the skill as I could as fast as I could. I’ve been playing since I was 12 years old and the stroke had me in a place where I had to get the feel back of what playing the bass feels like. When I picked up the bass again it felt very foreign but since I’ve been putting in the time, things are feeling much better, I want to take in some lessons in order to unlearn some bad playing habits and restart some things from a fresh place. As far as my fine goes I will post a cover when I get a chance to record it, The new songs that I’ve learned since I got home from the hospital are Tin Man by America and Midnight at the Oasis by Maria Muldar so my cover will likely be one or both of those. I’m just glad I can continue to learn regardless of having a stroke, the stroke didn’t affect that part of my brain. Thank Goodness!

Hey good to hear the recovery is going well! It’s never too late to get back into music and IMO the size and physicality of the bass is half the fun of playing it

Midnight at the Oasis would be my pick - it’s a bit tough to play but the results are worth it

Hi @Bmore_Bass_Player . Sorry to hear about your stroke, but I applaud your desire and persistance. Happy to hear about your positive progress. Hopefully, you’ll find the following inspirational.

My piano teacher from '61-'64 was the soloist for the St. Louis Philharmonic. The weekly 2-hour lessons on Saturday morning were brutal, but laid the foundation for everything musical I’ve done since. She suffered a stroke when she was 62, losing the use of her right arm. But that didn’t slow her down. She switched to LHA (Left Hand Alone) arrangements. She continued to practice daily, and memorized sixty works for left hand alone. Here she is at 82 years old.
