I’ve got a Sixties P in my dark Queen and it’s really great. Lot of mids and highs, good clarity and presence.
DQ is a wonderful bass

@howard It’s difficult to judge from Lobster’s video audio. Because…YouTube.
But, to my ear, your recording of the dry Hybrid II tone had more low frequency balls to it. More airy-ness, too.
Again, it could be an apples to eggshells comparison because of how YT tends to shit on audio with its compression.
What do you guys think?
That’s an uploaded mp3 and soundcloud compresses too
I agree the Hybrid II has more low end. And yeah it’s open and airy. Not a bad pickup, at all, just not quite punchy and aggressive enough for what I want out of a P.
True, but there’s compression and then there’s YouTube.
I produce pro videos for my tech clients, and upload them to Vimeo. The difference in audio quality versus degradation compared to YT is drastic.
Here’s another review of the Sire P5 that provides intriguing contrast and corroboration to Lobster’s.
I gotta say, I’m impressed by the materials, finish and build quality of the P5. As for tone, this reviewer’s touch and playing is different enough from Lobster’s that it brings out tones that LEL does not and cannot produce, given his touch and the styles he normally plays.
I know Sire quality first-hand from owning two other models. So this impeccably finished Alder/Roasted Maple P bass is extremely compelling. Again, even if/when I throw some Fralin pups on this bad boy, the cost for the total package would be so reasonable it should be illegal.
Sire is a good product. Hard to find one in stock though, a P5 that is. Your plan is a good one though
That hasn’t been my experience. Others’ mileage may vary.
I’ve got a line on two. Just debating whether I’d go with the red or green body.
I like the red personally, but that doesn’t mean anything
Sure, it does. I appreciate opinions on this.
I dig the red one, but the green looks distinctive with the reddish neck and pickguard, too.
Maybe, but the red catches my eye. It’s bold., I like bold sometimes
Good choice. Are you swapping pups?
Thanks. Very likely I’ll go Fralin. I want to have a vintage P tone.
But I want to hear the P5’s tone for a while. Give it a good shake.
Ugh, only thing I cant stand about Sires is that headstock.
also it can be a real concern if you tune in Drop A or something, but the low end is not really there (or at least, not really that low) in EADG anyway ! + the split P pickup has never been intended for extreme low end, that’s not the purpose.
I never notice a headstock when I’m playing, so no big deal. It’s how a bass is built and plays that counts most for me.
Never going to tune down, so all’s good.
