How can I get an electric bass to sound like a double bass using plugins?

I reached a new phase of music taste, where I listen to funny folks-punky bands like Kaizers Orchestra, Les Negresses Vertes and Gogol Bordello.

Don’t know, how I got there - but I love it! It really is good mood music, which pleases my fingers too., cause of all the funny bass lines.

I am working on some covers, but often they play double bass in the original track.

Is there a way to get an electric bass to sound like a double bass, using plugins? I repeat: using plugins!!!

I will not change hardware - no new bass. no new strings etc. - but I have three short scale basses with flatwounds to use:

  • a P/J fretless with the terrible horrible sh#tty Ernie Ball Cobalt flats
  • a H/H with the fantatstic TI flats (can be configured as J/J, H/J or J/H)
  • a P/H with the fantatstic TI flats (can be configured as P/H or P/J).

Currently the P/H sounds best for emulating double bass. But I’m not quite there yet.

Any ideas?

Yes, but. Google “bass octaver vst plugin” or “bass octave vst plugin”. Most of what you’ll find work well with guitar, but have serious problems with the lower notes of a bass. These plugins are pitch shifters. Some are free, others are cheap (in the 10 € range).

If you want to actually sound like a double bass, that’s doable, but not cheap. The cleanest example is using Jam Origin’s MIDI Bass (part of MIDI Guitar 2 (v3 is in beta (available for testing))) to drive an acoustic double bass virtual instrument (there are several good ones). Check out the video. You can drive all sorts of virtual instruments with your bass.

You might want to start with the free octaver plugins or the demo versions of the paid ones. If they give you results you can live with, great. If not, you’ll need to pull out your virtual wallet.

Thanks! I think I have several octavers - but do they not just add some lower harmonics?

About MIDI Bass: there are other reasons for such a plugin too (creating syth sounds). I’m thinking more about using Ovox, as this has the same functionality, in terms of MIDI out.

My “fear” is, that a MIDI converter takes out the “soul” of the sound for double bass, if you know what I mean.
So I would like to be as close as possible to whatever my bass produces … and go from there.

Yeah, they’re simple pitch shifters. Even if you pitch down one octave to the AUB range, it will still sound like your electric bass. And below a given note in the middle-lower range of your bass, it’ll sound like crap.

If you want to sound like an AUB, you will definitely need to go the MIDI to AUB virtual instrument route. Check out the second of the three videos above. Note that MIDI Guitar supports MPE (I don’t know about MIDI Bass (maybe the MIDI Bass 2 beta that comes with MIDI Guitar 3). You’ll need an AUB VI that accepts MPE MIDI (bends, vibrato, etc.).

There are some plug-ins or effects that emulate a fretless bass - that could help.

Other than that, try to favor the neck pickup, roll off the treble a bit more, and in particular, pluck the strings almost where the fretboard ends, i.e., much higher up than you’d normally do.

Hahaha! NO HARDWARE! Haven’t you heared about my dictator terrorist girlfriend that keeps me in the dungeons, only to have me come out dancing Hula for her friends or cleaning the kitchen? NO HARDWARE ALLOWED

Ah, one step closer, thanks!

Is there a reason to use a fretless plugin for my fretless bass?

She calls me many things I don’t get (yeah, she can speak Russian!).
But I answer in Dutch (no, she doesn’t speak Dutch)

Yes, a few but it would be like using effects/ plug ins to simulate fretless. You know and I know it’s not the same.

Doesn’t need to be the same - just an approximation. Do you know specific plugins?

By the way: my gf might allow me to get a … Reverend Dub King. Or a Reverend Lil LinhBacker, which is basically the same, but for girls. I don’t mind the sparkly purple.

I saw an offer for a slightly damaged Dub King for about 900€.
It’s new, but has a (fixed) fracture at the neck. It’s tested and the fracture was just superficial.

What do you think? Semi acoustic is kind of a double bass, right???!

Not really, Semi Acoustic is kinda like acoustic-ish. not the same. You can get the acoustic tone easily by adding saddle piezo that’s 100% acoustic bass tone. Graph Tech makes one I put that on one of my Jazz bass took it to a gig someone bought it on the spot.

As for the Upright sound check this out, This bloke is not bad. I don’t know his name, :joy:

Looked at that … thought about it for a second … and rejected the idea.
On the pro side it would be an interesting mod for my fretless. On the con side it’s too much for an occasional use case.

But … I am looking for your GO for the Reverend Lil LinhBacker or the damaged&fixed Dub King. My girlfriend gave up, cause I don’t dream about her as much anymore, but about the Dub King instead
So, she is inclined to give me permission to get it.

Did you have a look at the pictures above? You have to look closely to see the damage. It was fixed and tested by Thomann. They say it’s 100% ok and new (shipment damage).

900€…

@JerryP has the Dub King, if I remember correctly. Ar you happy with it, Jerry?

It’s funny you should start this thread. When I return from my current business trip in a couple of weeks, I plan on recording a cover using the Dub King and an upright bass patch for the Zoom B1 Four pedal. To me, it sounds really close to an upright but after I post the cover, I’ll let you all decide.

Very cool - looking forward to that!

So, you’re happy with the Dub King?

And: do you know what that patch does? Can you explain?
