I’m a definite “C”.
I’ve been recently practicing some etudes from Talkingbass course that require playing well beyond 12th fret.
It is not a big issue when you play standing - I keep my bass quite high.
(the only problem is the bass weight for longer period of time as I have some back issues)
I couldn’t find any comfortable sitting position.
The position “A” or “B” (right leg) makes it almost impossible to comfortably play 17th fret on my P bass.
The position “C” (left leg or “between” legs) gives me nice 17th fret reach but isn’t very comfortable for my back. I have a feeling that P bass doesn’t have the best body shape for that position.
I need much lighter bass.
My PJ Yamaha is mostly like, playing on my feet with a 45o angle… It kinda helps me get to the higher frets, my pinky refuses to get stretched, STILL.
My Thunderbird replica on the other hand… God is so heavy. Neck dives a lot too. So it’s more like a horizontal way but my hand isn’t stretched at all when I fret.
Hopefully you are using a strap when you are sitting or standing.
Josh has mentioned this several times in his videos and said whether if you are sitting and stand up the bass position should remain the same.
I always use the strap, but in order for the instrument to stay entirely in the same position it would have to be literally under my chin (and I keep my bass relatively high already)
If I had something with a small body (like Ibanez, Spector etc) then maybe it would work. It doesn’t work with P bass. The cable plug is precisely where my right leg is. So it needs to be either on one side of the leg or another. Neither position is close to where the instrument is when I play standing.
PS.
Almost no one demoes basses in standing position, unfortunately. Most YouTubers show them in “unstrapped sitting position”.
So it’s a legit T-Bird
What about something hybrid? Like a taller stool, so you are resting your back, but are off your legs too. If it has something to hook your heel on, so much the better.
I do have a nice stool:
I would use it if I only had space for it. Alas, here in the UK our interiors are rather small… ahem… cosy
Can’t fit that and my office chair together into my home office/practice area.
Time to reevaluate the old priorities then, ain’t it?
I am affraid bass won’t get proiority here as this is my place of work mainly.
Being tall and clumsy, I’m afraid of such stools. I can already see myself falling off it and breaking my neck trying to save the guitar
Anyway, I play (actually practice ) only sitting down. I keep my right leg on my left leg (and guitar on the right thigh). I know it’s very unhealthy for the spine but comfortable. And I’ve never had any problems reaching the 20th fret.
I’m an A type. But after reading some of this thread I think I gotta go find my old levy’s strap and start playing standing up.
I’m type B unless I put on strap then I’m more A.
