Hey Bassbuzzers, I’m slightly freaking out. I’ve been told to come out of my shell and should start socializing more (great idea…), so this Monday I took my bass teacher up on his suggestion and wrote a mail to the leader of one of the school bands there, since they are short on bass players.
He wrote me Monday and said that sounds good and I should show up on Thursday for rehearsal. After the initial freak out, I wrote back and asked which genres and songs they are doing. No answer until today, where I got presented material for 3 songs and he also mentioned they were working on 2 more.
Now the material he sent is only for sight reading, so no tabs. I’m currently taking solfège classes and have started a sight reading class over on Talkingbass, but the keyword is started. We have not even gotten to the bass clef in the class yet.
Now the realist in me is telling me that I should not be expected to learn 5 songs the day before rehearsing with a school band…the insecure perfectionist in me disagrees. Now the songs in question are Hozzier - Too sweet. Mr Big - Wild World, Shania Twain - that don’t impress… Brandi Carlisle - The story and Skunk Anasie - Hedonism. Last one I’ve been practicing the last hour since there was tabs with and I can play it reasonably well, but there other ones I’d be really grateful if someone had some tabs. There’s several videos of each, with scrolling tabs, but for me, I prefer to have it on sheets in front of me.
If someone could help out, I’ll name my first album after you, since I’m done having kids.
I’m really looking for tabs that I can print. I can sight read tabs very well, but too learn 5 songs completely from scratch without having anything infront of me will be tough. But thanks!
How much time?
It’s not very difficult really. You just need to fill your RAM with these songs and nothing else. Load it on your playlist and just listen to them when you are not practicing and just practice them until your performance.
That’s what did when I transcribed learned 20 songs I’ve never heard of in 3 keys in 6 days. I just kept my head down and grind.
Five songs in one day
It will certainly help to check the song structure and chord progressions to assimilate them faster.
If there are tricky parts, simplify them. You will have the opportunity to get them right later on.
I’m listening to them right now, like Al suggested, then I’ll hit the shed right after.
It will be fine, as long as I have tabs in front of me, I can manage somehow, and yes I will simplify a few transitions here and there and just play the root.
I got the impression they haven’t actually said you need to play all these 5 songs. It seemed like you were invited to an audition and in response to your question about what they played, they named these songs. I doubt they expect you to learn all 5 in 48 hours. Get one or two down well and I’m sure that will be sufficient. And actually probably better than getting all 5 down poorly.
