Was playing something tonight with slap through. I’m still garbage here and miss the strings completely 40% of the time but…
I used to think popping was waaayy louder than slapping. I can create a slap tone with enough slap through force that volume isn’t high.
But.
Tonight I was trying to slap through as loud as I could and by golly for a few hits the volume between slaps and pops was closer and it sounded really good.
I’m still lost on the bounce technique maybe I do need to lower my pickups but slap through seems like a better bet to me. It puts you in position for a double thumb (in time) and it gets you used to the motion you would use if just playing with your thumb which I’m starting to like because I have nails of steel no matter how short I cut them.
Anyway just popping back in (see what I did there?) I’ll probably wake this thread back up in another 6mo
So we are in the same place. I have just finished the course as well, and I tried already some of the Masterclasses, but I haven’t tried the slap Masterclass yet. I have been waiting for the right moment. I usually like to practice at night, and I’m afraid of making too much noise. I’ll have to try it during the day. But I think I will want to first explain to my husband what I’m about to do, so he doesn’t think I’m mistreating my bass . If someone doesn’t know what is going on, it might appear as an act of rage and violence against an innocent bass guitar…
I really need to get back in and try the new course out. I’m off work through most of November and December (burning through use or lose vacation time), so that might be a great project to work on. I’m already working on something atm or I’d start now. I dig the idea of those master classes.
So today I was alone at home in the afternoon, and I tried the Slap Masterclass. I actually managed to get a good sound out of it, but it’s hard. And it is loud (I took my headphones for a moment and wow, it was loud). I don’t think slapping is a thing I will pursue for the moment, but maybe sometime in the future. I’m glad at least I got it without much difficulty.
Slap it, a little slap practice consistently and you’ll likely be surprised how your quality grows.
maxhbass on yt is a great teacher for new to slap players, my favorite and you’ll be making cool grooves on day 1.
