Inexpensive, not cheap pedals?

Hi family,

I’ve mentioned elsewhere that I’m a 3-piece post-punk band.

As such there are moments in our songs where I need to fill as much space as possible without overpowering the guitar lol.

I’ve decided that a fuzz pedal would be my first piece of gear and have started to look at brands like EHX, JOYO, and Berhinger. I don’t want to spend too much on a single pedal but also don’t want keep replacing a poorly designed one either.

What are your thoughts on not only the pedals you like for fuzz but also the brands to consider?

i hate fuzz. i just hate how it sounds. that said, almost everyone on earth agrees that a rat is the classic fuzz sound, including on bass (and yes, i am biased here). you can get a rat pretty damn cheap, and any of the thousands of clones even cheaper if you need/want.

I know what you mean lol

I was happy enough with a pretty basic gritty bass tone but we as a band agreed this would work best.

Interestingly enough, my guitarist uses a ratt pedal!

EVERYBODY uses a rat pedal. synths, drums, singers, bla bla bla. don’t get me wrong there are a million songs out there that are fuzzed out that i love, i just personally would never use that sound. but if you need it for a sound, you need it.

Does it matter that it’s not really voiced for bass?

Wouldn’t you lose lowend?

there are clones that have a blend knob if it worries you. but it’s been used for decades just the way it is, on a bazillion different instruments including bass. so me personally, i wouldn’t be too concerned.

You can not use a guitar pedals on anything else but guitars. The manufacturer will miss out on making money packaging the same pedals for bass. :joy:

You could extend your search to overdrive pedals. Some might give your sound enough crunch to go with the kind of music you are playing.

That might however complicate your search by adding even more options

For a post punk band, maybe take a look at a tubescreamer? It’s less muddy than a fuzz pedal, giving you more of an overdriven tube amp sound rather than out and out distortion.

I sort of need mud…

grit/OD will likely come from the amp until I get a pedal for that (maybe not) but for the songs I need to fill space, the bigger the better.

Should you want to make your search more complicated by including overdrive, I picked up a Joyo Monomyth a few months ago for about $85 on amazon. Pretty pleased with it so far.

I mean it’s a eventual thing - although it will likely come straight from the amp, I might go with a BDDI clone preamp for consistency.

NOT sure if I’ll go with a chorus at some at some point but it’s possible.

I was actually looking at this and the Tidalwave.

I’m legit on the fence - a more classic overdrive vs modern.

For the price it’s unreal!

I watched AMP review them on his youtube channel against the darkglass versions and it’s SO close.

That AMP review was actually the deciding factor for me, for sure!

Plastic knobs and a sometimes faulty unit are probably the only cons and those can be easily remedied.

The EHX Bass Big Muff Pi is a great pedal, if you like fuzz. This is it going in to an EHX Bass Clone chorus:

Fuzz and Chorus, like peanut butter and chocolate

I just introduced someone to PB and Chocolate Oreos just today actually…
