Introduce Yourself! (2018-2022)

Greetings all, I purchased my first bass in 1978, took a few lessons from bass players in local band’s but never really applied myself, so I took a break until 2020. Trying to learn a bit from what I find on the web and basically just having fun.

Hi,

I am 37 years old from Australia. I used to play drums growing up and did some gigs back in school/college days. Fast forward few decades, I still have a drum kit now, but restrictions around space, how loud I can play etc limits my time on the drumkit.

I always wanted to learn a string instrument and had a special attraction for the bass. (Maybe I thought my sense of rhythm would be of some help). I picked up a brand new Squier PJ Bass pack day before yesterday and came across BassBuzz lessons on Youtube.

They have been super helpful and I have progressed till the plucking technique. But am now stuck at the Fretting technique video. Do you guys have some weird alien hands? I can’t even properly reach the fretboard strings without resting the neck on my palm…and even then my fingers are at an angle, making it hard for the pinky to come anywhere close to the string. :expressionless: Would love some tips/advice on getting my hand to reach…or do I have anti-alien super small hands? Is there any such thing as small hands? How do I find out? :\

Cheers.

Welcome, @shadowarrior! If you use the search function, you should be able to find a number of threads discussing hand size, finger lengths and such topics and how to deal with it, and how much it actually matters. Prepare to have your mind blown and hopes restored

Thanks @Mac nice to e-meet you  Am in Gold Coast (moved from Melbourne in 2010). Hope the state gets back to normal routine soon, looks like the numbers are coming down fast! :sunny:

Thanks @joergkutter on to it right now  Just getting my way around the forums and reading some threads. Your reply has already injected me with some positive pills, am on a mission now to tame my weird left hand! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m in Melbourne along with Mac.
I play drums as well, but I don’t have to worry about disturbing the peace😁
Not that I practice very often, I devote my time to bass😎

Reckon that was a good move @shadowarrior. Really over theses restrictions now. May even be looking to leave the state if things align in the not so distant future

Hey @shadowarrior,
It takes time to develop dexterity in your hands and fingers👍
Learning bass with A drum background should really help you progress pretty quickly👍
High hat ,snare, bass drum, lock them in and your covered:+1::sunglasses:

Welcome @BaltimoreGeezer, cheers to having fun!

Welcome @shadowarrior! I do have weird alien hands, but most bass players don’t. :alien: There are some good threads here on the forum about that, try searching through the Technique category for starters. (edit: I see you already got that advice :stuck_out_tongue:)

Hi everyone, I played Bass a lot in a few local bands for years. I got some lessons and have pretty well have developed my ear but ended up just chugging root notes a lot and playing basic slap (thumb down) after many years now I realize I’m stuck and it feels like I’m a bit of a pretender so here I am to learn properly from scratch. Watching Josh’s videos on Youtube have inspired me to learn again from the gound up. 20+ years have passed since I first picked up a Bass. I really hope these lessons can make me feel like less of a pretender and more like a Bass Player.
