Hi everyone! My name is Phil, and I’ve been playing bass for about 20 years, entirely self taught. I have played almost entirely at church and I want to get better. I would say I’ve always been exceedingly mediocre and I want to take my playing to the next stage. I tried another popular online bass lesson program and it had way too much content and found myself way over my head, I didn’t know where to start. I gave up after 4 months. Here’s hoping BassBuzz can do the trick!
FWIW I play a G&L Kiloton (USA). It is the single most comfortable bass I’ve ever played and I absolutely love it.

Greetings all. I’m Tim and found this place while searching for tips on learning to sight read and got involved in reading what is probably one of many tab vs standard notation discussions and was all fire up to contribute, only to discover the thread had been closed.
I not a bass player - but I find myself in the position of having to play bass for a local amateur theatrical company in May. I’m a guitarist, but I know enough about bass to understand they are totally different instruments an need to be approached differently.
The production will be mix of musical theatre songs throughout the ages, and I expect some music will have chord charts and some will be piano copy only. I can probably busk the former (as a minimum I can get away with root/5th, riffs and arpeggios) but for the latter I’ll need to read - and with little or no band rehearsal time, I suspect sight read standard notation. (I learned to read as a choirboy and also for flute, so I understand the technicalities, but i do not read for guitar)
So I thought I ought to at least try to take it a bit seriously and learn the rudiments of playing bass properly.
There’s a wealth of material on the interweb but immediately I come across conflicts (eg for plucking - use the tips of your fingers vs use the fleshy part of your fingers) so I guess I’ll just work on what’s best for me.
As an old git of 60 years, it’s going to take some time to learn, but I’ve no doubt I’ll gain a lot of satisfaction. I’m not expecting to become even a barely adequate bass played by May, but I do hope not to embarrass myself or let the team down.
