Well, when I tried guitar, I went with Gibson Les Paul Standard, Fender Stratocaster and for acoustic, a nice Taylor Mini GS. My Fender was stolen 
I like to stick to known well regarded standards and just have really good gear rather than lots of gear.
Trying to figure out how that will translate on the Bass side now…
I’m using my Fender Mustang III amp right now, and not happy with it at all for the Bass. I will be shopping for a Bass amp soon. Maybe even tonight.

If you already enjoy playing a strat why not check out a Fender Jazz or PJ Deluxe either Mexican or American (used if you want to save some cash).
As far as an amp goes the Fender Rumble 40 & 100 models (all depend on the gear the people you are playing with have) are pretty good for the money. They are directly geared towards bass and may have a edge over the sims for bass in the Mustang.

Welcome, I am self taught on harmonica and guitar. I received a bass guitar for Christmas so I decided to learn it. I started out playing organ and as life got busier when I got out of college I quit keyboards and music all together for awhile.

I have had a Fender Player Jazz, and a Squire Paranormal Jazz. Of the two, I would recommend the Paranormal. Just as well built and half the price.
A PJ is also a good bet.
A bass I would also recommend is the ESP B204. ESP is a top company, and this particular bass is very well constructed, as well built as any in the price range. And being dual humbuckers, versatile.

I went and bought a Fender Rumble 40 Amp tonight. I think it will be great for my needs. While I was trying it out I plugged in a Fender American Pro II P Bass. I really like playing that. I also tried the Fender Player Jazz Bass Plus Top Limited-Edition Mexican. It was very nice too, but The American Pro II had a fun punchy sound to it. The jazz bass has a beautiful sound but more smooth rather than punchy.

If you ever get out to DFW, TX in Fort Worth and Dallas there exists a restaurant called “Spiral Diner” (apparently they opened a 3rd one in Denton). It’s pretty much typical diner/Americana food, vegan-style. It’s f’ing delicious, too. Even meat-eaters love it lol.
