Hi. Andrea here. At the tender age of almost 59 I’ve decided to try the bass! I fell in love with it after listening to Sting’s Nothing like The Sun LP oh so many years ago now. Alas, I badly broke my wrist five years ago and that make the fingers on my left hand cramp quickly. Fretting with the index finger is painful! I hope to take it slow and work those muscles carefully in the hopes I can make it better. I have also noticed that my fingers are somewhat shorter than yours. I can’t put the index on the first fret and the pinky on the third at the same time. Am I doomed? Love it so far. My ultimate goal? Play the bass solo riff in Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al”. That would be amazing. If my left hand will loosen up…
Welcome @achavez47
I too have a bad wrist injury ( a momentary lack of judgment/road rage)but time, patience and practice have really helped it
Welcome @achavez47 Andrea!
Welcome aboard @achavez47 Andrea! Have fun and use the lessons as physical therapy!
Welcome aboard @achavez47 ,
Enjoy the ride,
Cheers Brian
I wonder if you’d be more comfortable on the Ibanez Mikros; they are 3/4 scale instruments, 28.6" vs 34" so the distance between the frets is shorter. That said, micro-shifting (Josh will show it in the videos) can help a lot if you can’t quite make the reach over time.
Welcome @achavez47, at the age of 59 you are in good company here. You’ll find many 50+ 60+ 70+ newbies in this forum. Enjoy the B2B course and use it as physical therapy.
Glad you are here @achavez47
Many struggle getting across frets for a variety of reasons and find ways.
Kids do it (albeit they are much more bendy).
Shorter scale basses is a great suggestion if you find yourself impeded in progress.
