Hello all,
My name’s Graeme, and its good to be here.
I’ve been playing bass since I was 17 or 18 years old, and that’s… -counts fingers with tongue out - 40 years ago now. Gasp, how did THAT happen.
I’ve mostly played in pub cover bands around Edinburgh, although the first band was just outside Glasgow, as I was originally dragged up on the west coast.
Working out other players’ bass lines not only made me a better player, but it gave me an appreciation for music that other band members brought to the jam.
The downside was that I was so in love with playing that I had no time (or money) for lessons, and consequently picked up bad habits and poor technique.
You have to realise that all this was pre-internet (lord, I sound like SUCH a dinosaur) in the early 80’s, so a musical education was nowhere near as accessible as it is today.
The bad news is that since roughly 2010 my playing has declined considerably, with a year long stint with a band that year which practiced/rehearsed, but never gigged.
One of my cardinal rules was broken, ie that a band must progress within a year or its not working out.
It was a fun time, good vibes and people, but just frustrating.
So for the last 15 years or so, I’ve not played or practiced. This year, I decided to get back to it, and found that, unsurprisingly, I’m more than a bit crap.
Then I stumbled across Josh on YouTube with his lessons, and thought “This guy is good!” And here I am.
I am also taking the opportunity to re-learn how to play, to attempt to correct poor fretting hand technique (which limits fluidity for me) and also to learn fingerstyle ‘plucking’ because, as I pointed out earlier in this bio, I’m a bit of a dinosaur and playing with a pick in the post punk era was the cool thing to do.
Boy, have I got work to do.

Welcome @Traquairbear. I tried to learn a six string around 1990, it was tough, and I didn’t last long. We are so lucky nowadays to have all these resources so easily available. The BTB course is great, no matter your previous experience, you will learn a lot. I’ve only been playing six months and haven’t finished the course yet, but I stand by my endorsement of it!

Welcome, @Traquairbear. Glad you’re here. There are several Buzzers with past flat pick guitar and/or bass playing experience. Like you, I turned to B2B specifically to learn how to play fingerstyle bass and to correct bad bass habits. Man, Josh delivers the goods, and a whole lot more. Just relax and follow his lead at every step. Enjoy the lessons!

Good evening @HighlandBass. Its been some time since my days on the Black Isle and our wee cottage in Glenlivet. I do miss both.
My family is orginally from Hawick, although I was brought up in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. These days I spend most of my time to the north of Coimbra, central Portugal.
Thank you, and the others above, for your kind welcomes.
Yes, Billie Jean is a bit of a cow.

Hello everyone,
I’m Sevinç. I live in Turkey. I’ve seen Josh’s bass videos on YouTube. I thought it would be great to work with such a fun teacher. I like to play bass and play strategy games. But there’s more I need to learn, and here I am. Peace. :slightly_smiling_face:

Welcome @Traquairbear , I also started playing music (drums) in the digital prehistoric age (1987) , good lesson material was expensive and hard to come by , especially video material where you could see the pros play. You had to do it by ear or get lessons from fellow players that were in your circle, who were willing to help but not always great teachers, or even musicians
It’s incredible these days what learning material is available now, if you want to learn anything, it’s out there , not only for music but everything you would like to know or learn
Wow now I feel like a dinosaur too…

Have fun with the course!
