Howdy all! I’m Will, 38 years young. I’ve tried learning instruments a few times over the years, but never was able to stick with them for one reason or another (uninteresting teacher, getting time to actually practice, or even being able to find zero direction and instruction so said instrument just collected dust). I’ll be starting the B2B course in the very near future (it’s a sort of known birthday present), but have been absolutely binging the BB YouTube in the meantime. Suffice it to say, I’m hooked on the Bass like nothing else. Professionally I’ve always been part of the group that is the unsung hero, the hidden lynchpin, the part you don’t notice until it’s not there and everything just falls apart rapidly without them; I’ve been a Bassist my whole life and just didn’t realize it.

Welcome, @Will_Lokeer. Glad you’re here. You’ve landed in the exactly right place to learn bass and, frankly, how to approach learning music. Take your time, feel free to ask any question, and enjoy the lessons!

Hi! My name is Alfonso and I am 41 years old. My journey with the bass began back in 98 after my best friend introduced me to TOOL’s undertow, I was in high school so my parents did not like the fact that I chose BASS over a beep (guitar) and they both agreed not to lend me money to buy one. I worked delivering flyers and saved money until I was able to buy a 5-string Babylon sort of Jazz Bass. Until that time I ve never play bass so it beat my ass and hands, the frets were unfinished, sharp, and uneven, and the fret buzzed in every single part of the fretboard, I did give up I took one single month of classes, and those did not go well cause I wanted to achieve that Paul D’amour’s Ricksound, and the lesson’s where meant for learning notes and rhythm patterns. After a few years, the trust rod of My Bass just would not work, the guy who “fixed” back then was a stoner and I believe he did not know also how it worked. I bought another one, a Yamaha RXB375, active, with 2 humbuckers, 5 strings, also, that was back in 2005, I still got it. After that, my friend formed a band he invited me to be a part of not as the bassist but as the singer; the band went on until My friend left and became a psiquiatrst and I became an emergency physician. I played the bass now and then, and I knew a few songs like Deftones, Chevelle, cold, TOOL, and APC, the first song I learned to play was Schism, then Judith, Prison Sex, Aenima, Stinkfist, I practiced bits of the songs. I realized that my fretting hand felt awkward and stiff, At that time I was in My late 30’s. I stumbled upon a video for improving form and technique on SBL, but It was confusing, I keep searching and I saw Josh performing a Bach suite on bass and was like damn!!! That guy can play!!! The first video that really helped me improve My technique was one of his Five Levels of Bass Fingers, I watched it over six months and practiced alone, and thanks to that video my fretting hand went from aw to wow. I derailed from the path to see if I could win an expensive Fodera bass so I was subscribed for 14 days to SBL until the contest ended and I forgot to cancel the subscription and paid for an entire year of SBL ONLINE courses. I did not win anything. The site is confusing, so much stuff in it, they have a player’s path, a jazz accelerator, slap accelerator, the one thing I enjoyed the most was the full interviews. I quit My subscription and did not learn anything new, I basically threw my money away, 499 bucks!! Now, in my early forties, My Best friend, again, formed a band and he did not include me, I came to realize that it is the cause of my awful playing, my lack of music theory and harmony comprehension. So I am here to learn, practice, and improve my ear, rhythm, chord progression, arpeggios, scales, and everything this awesome community has to offer, from beginner to badass.
