There are DR Strings Wooten Signature 40-90. They are lighter than standard, but they aren’t all that light compared to standard string gauge.
@Cerridwen flats are definitely nice. I’ve got a custom D’Addario set of Chromes on my cello guitar and DR Legends Heavy on my semi-hollow guitar.
@MikeC I’ve got an 8-string guitar with a .85g bottom string.
My basses don’t have anything less than a .120 for the bottom. Lol. C# standard is the highest I tune and I prefer 'em thick.
… actually, I may have a .90 to put on that since it is in drop E instead of F# standard.
Welcome @Cerridwen !
Yep, for drop tunings, I get it. In contrast, Wooten plays standard all the way.
Howdy! Welcome to the low life!
Welcome @Cerridwen !
Hello Is that a Welsh name? It sounds beautiful.
Welcome fellow Canuck!
Welcome!
Welcome @Cerridwen , glad to have you here!
Hi @Cerridwen , welcome, what a story, but you landed home
Hello to all. I slowly learning my around the website so I am repeating below what I wrote for my profile (with some new additions)
74 years old. Total beginner. Decided to learn bass guitar to learn how to keep time, hear chord changes, how to use my hands properly on a fretted instrument and to learn to play along with others in a jam session.
Tried to learn Scruggs style banjo in the early 70’s but was only taught to memorize songs and never got past that speed up slow down horrible sound stage. I will be signing up for the beginner to badass course because I like the things that are taught.
I am looking to buy a bass first. I am really leaning toward a semi hollow boy used bass from Musicians Friend. I am trying to find the right forum to see what is already posted rather than ask the same old questions. Have some physical issues which will prevent me from standing up to play but think my hands will be agile enough to play. Any advice is welcome. My music tastes runs from 60’s San Francisco rock to classic rock to Gordon Lightfoot.
I need to add 60s surfer instrumentals to my musical likes.
I was looking up Hofner club basses on youtube and ran across a 10 year old demo by a guy. He never spoke so I don’t if he was American, British, German. He was wearing a black Homburg hat and a black chief’s jacket. Any way he did finger plucking? to start and then demoed the changes in tone by fiddling with the knobs and ended by playing part of Wipe Out" by the Surfaris from the early 60s and he blew me away. Took me back to my middle teens and a flood of memories about surfer shirts and chino pants.
So the last couple of days I have been listening to surfer instrumentals rather than Gordon Lightfoot.
Welcome, @UncleToad. Glad you’re here. Enjoy!
Welcome
Welcome, glad to have you with us.
Welcome in brother
Welcome @UncleToad
Have fun!
Thanks MikeC. And thank you for your advice in the Gear category.
Thank you Morkai.
Thank you TheMadBassist. I enjoyed looking at your youtube videos. “Spirit in the Sky” was a song I remember well and so is “I won’t back down” by Tom Petty. You are very accomplished ( and yes I do understand that to play like you takes a bass guitar and maybe 50ish years of practice.)
