Thank you StevFargan.
Well I wouldn’t say it would take 50ish years brother haha but i appreciate your kind words! I’ve been playing bass off and on for about 24 years. Mostly on, but I enjoy it a lot and spend some time with it for sure. We are all here to help you become a great bassist in any way we can. This is a great group of people from all over, bringing all kinds of experiences from audio/video, stage and studio, etc., so if you have questions, no doubt someone will have the answer. I enjoyed reading your small bio! Thanks for checking out my channel on YouTube, much appreciated!!
^^ So much this. I wouldn’t be nearly as far ahead as I am without the community here, and I absolutely wouldn’t have been posting YouTube covers after 2 months without the awesome support and encouragement from these guys and gals
That said, be warned, they can be pretty lethal on your budget…
Welcome @UncleToad enjoy!
Welcome @UncleToad.
It’s never too late to pick up an instrument. I also had some touch and goes and since I started last year, I only stopped playing daily when I broke my hand.
As for the bass selection, I don’t know exactly what are you physical limitations, but it would be nice if you could visit a music shop. Not all basses are made equal and some will feel and resonate better with you, so I’d suggest that you visit a shop first.
I am also a Beach Boys fan… one of my first favourite bands growing up.
I have been here in BassBuzz for maybe over a month and having a blast… this is more than just a bunch of bassists… it is a nice community with varied musical tastes, experiences and preferences… but respect is always there!
Welcome @UncleToad !
The struggle is real
Welcome @UncleToad !
Welcome @UncleToad !
Morkai:
Thanks for the encouragement (and the warning).
Thanks qenden.
When I saw your picture at first I thought you were Red Green (main character on a tv show out of Canada) but I see you are from Holland.
Welcome @UncleToad !!
Thanks Megatronpt. I did not go a music shop to buy my bass for a very shameful reason. I would not know how to make a coherent sound come out of a bass. And then the salesperson would take it and show me how good it sounded.
And I noticed one very vital fact over the years: An accomplished musician can play a poor instrument and make seem great. A beginner like me will struggle trying to make it sound half as good. At least that is what I found out when I started out on a 5 string banjo. I had a Kay banjo I bought down in Denver at a Pawn shop on Colfax ave. and I could not get it to make music to save my soul. Then I bought a new Alverez banjo in 1974 and learned how much easier it was with a good banjo. I will post on Gear details about the bass I bought online (you would think that after 50 years I would be smarter).
There are lots and lots of folks here who were in your exact position at one time. Please ask for advice here. We can help you know what to look for in a new instrument, regardless of your current ability to tell the difference or play.
An easy-playing bass is essential to every player, but especially to absolute beginners. In short, you need to eliminate barriers to learning how to play.
So please ask. Everyone here is more than glad to help you get going.
Thanks HighlandBass.
I was reading your summary and got sucked down a rabbit hole on the thread about practice seats. The one you bought looked pretty good so I looked it up on USA Amazon. It was there (surprise, surprise!) for only $65.98 (great)
$80.92 delivery (say what?)
Usually ships within 3 to 7 months (I may not live that long. Never mind)
Yep, that pretty well sums it up!
Haha no I’m red white blue !
Hi @MikeC I’m about a week into Simple Steps to Sight reading, and at this point can fret all 4 strings over the first 5 frets while reading music (mostly) without looking and am about ready to move onto the Rhythm section. Im nearly done with B2B. I took a sneak peek into Chord Tone Essentials and it looks like I really should complete Sight reading before starting that? Do you agree or can I run both in parallel? Interested in your thoughts.
I expect it’s made in Europe. I had no such problems over here. I would add that the padding is not so great. You really don’t want to spend too long sat on it! I have new padding I’m going to add to it when I get around to it!
