Welcome all newcomers, glad to have you!
^^^ What he said … I been away for a few days… hands actin up again.
Welcome to all! To those taking the course, you will love it!
Greetings and Happy New Year!
New member here, Douglas. I am 54, played the violin in 4th grade for 1 year, and haven’t played anything but an occasional Kazoo or Jaws Harp since. I decided to try to learn the bass so as to replace bad habits (wasting time with mobile games) with good habits (practicing the bass!).
I sold a perfect condition classic Vectrex gaming system from the 1980s to fund my purchase of a modest bass setup. After some research, I picked up that Donner DPB-510S package from Amazon, a Fender Rumble 40 amp, a stand, and a Donner clip-on tuner.
Shout out to Jason the Operations Wizard as well! Jason is amazing, willing to help me out without knowing me.
My username comes from pinball. I am a competitive pinball player, about to compete for the State Championship here in Maryland USA. There is a famous pinball designer, Steve Ritchie who also voiced video games like Mortal Kombat. He was once asked “What do you have to say to people that say your games are too hard?” He instantly replied in his signature growl: “Play better!”
I honestly wasn’t sure I could do this. Yesterday my bass arrived, I was able to start doing the course, and I had my “Aha!” moment during module 1 lesson 2, the very first “workout.” I thought to myself “Hey, I think I CAN do this!”
I woke up this morning wanting more. So here I am introducing myself before continuing on. Just cruising around the forum, it looks like a GREAT group of people in here, very supportive. I’m excited to see where this all goes.
Thanks for reading!

Welcome @PlayBetter ! Enjoy your time here.
Hi all! I’m 51 (but look more like 41, feel more like 31, and some people might say I act more like 21…) I just signed-up today and am excited to get started. I’ve been a perpetual beginner at guitar for, oh… almost 20 years now, but recently decided to “get good”. In that process, I’ve suddenly become interested in the bass as well. So got myself a Squire PJ (in the most beautiful blue imaginable) and I’m excited to get started.
Welcome GregX999! Beautiful looking bass you’ve got there.
Welcome @PlayBetter
Have fun!
Welcome @GregX999
Have fun!
Welcome! Where at? I grew up in Anne Arundel and Howard counties, and my oldest lives there now. I got to go back last year to visit and drive her around to all my old haunts in Columbia.
Hey Faydout! I live in Silver Spring now, just north of the beltway, but I play a lot of pinball up in Anne Arundel, there is a place called “Crabtowne” that you might remember. It’s still there! And we have a league in Colombia at a bar right next to the Merriweather post pavilion. I’m about to head out that way and end up at a place called Peabodys in Baltimore (city). Nice to meet you!
Thank you! I’m through another module since posting, and getting more excited.
Thank you!
Welcome here, @PlayBetter and @GregX999 ! I enjoyed reading your introductions and about your journey and I’m sure you guys will like it here.
Btw, Greg, this is a wonderful bass!
faydout & PlayBetter,
I spent 30+ years ('84 to '17) in Ellicott City/Howard County, MD during my ‘biz life/no bass’ phase before moving to Mark Twain, MO for the ‘do whatcha like’ phase of life (which includes rebassing). What years were you there, faydout? Maybe ‘Crack The Sky’ band years? Still love the band even if only for the great name. And I see you’re now in CO. Spent a few years during Evergreen’s best years of late '60’s early '70’s playing Little Bear/Big Bear and other joints. Daughter now in Denver who I visit. If you’re close we should connect next trip.
And PlayBetter… I make a return trip to EC now and then. Same invite to you to connect for a bass lunch if you’re close by.
Welcome, @PlayBetter. Glad you’re here. The perfect time to learn bass is when you start, whenever that happens to be. Enjoy the lessons!
Hey gottaplay!
That’s awesome, I LOVE the idea of a “do whatcha like” phase of life! I arrived in this area in 1995 when the Navy assigned me to BUPERS near the Pentagon, and I never left. Let me know next time you are back, I’m definitely up for some bass lunch!
Welcome, @GregX999. Glad you’re here. Enjoy!
I was in the Columbia / Ellicott City area (graduated from Howard High) until '96 when I left for bootcamp. I would have been one of those shitheads you were cursing at on main street Ellicott city hitting up the coffee shop down by the train tracks every weekend dressed in all black. Hit me up the next time you’re on your way out, we can definitely meet up for a grown up soda or coffee. I live in the north metro area of Denver (Thornton) and can get around most of Denver within about 45 minutes so if she’s in the area, you’ll be close.
Hey MikeC, thanks! I have heard the phrase “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”, and that’s what happened here. It was Josh’s free videos on YouTube that were a big factor in convincing me to jump in and try this. Having a blast so far!
Welcome @PlayBetter ! great username and story behind it… ( after the course, you will indeed ‘play better’! )
Welcome @GregX999 ! You are going to love the course… also as a member of the blue bass club, nice bass!
