Greetings to all - I’m 66 with some musical background when I was a kid and just started to learn the bass after watching some of Josh’s videos. I’m now into Module 5 and starting to feel like I can’t keep up (it was easy in the beginning!). Should I be practicing in between lessons? I am faithfully doing one lesson a day, 5x a week. Any tips out there? Btw, Josh is a tremendous teacher and blows away all of my music teachers of the past…especially the piano teacher who would rap my knuckles with a ruler, haha. All suggestions welcomed - I’m still stoked to get Badass!

:ocean: :ocean: @cb2me , nice to meet you!

There’s a post on the Technique board called “What are you struggling with” that is a perfect place to get some tips from the very helpful and experienced folks here. Maybe post there and throw a line in. Welcome to the forum!

I’m having a great time starting to play bass for the first time. I’m 64 years old and

just restarted trying to play guitar as well. After a little over a month I have discovered several things about myself:

I do have rhythm, and I’m a member of the bass doves where the head goes back and forth with the beat

I also had so much fun trying to nail the Billy Jean challenge where I had several misses in the full workout tempo, but also a recovery once in a while. I’m looking forward to return to this challenge from time to time, but now it’s time to continue to the next module.

Hello @cb2me and welcome!

The modules get gradually more difficult, but there are some easier and some more difficult. I remember when I went through the course, there was some point in the middle when I felt I couldn’t keep up, but then I noticed I was gradually getting better and it got easier.

Josh reminds us during the course not to get stuck when we can’t get through a full speed workout, and move on. You can always bookmark the difficult lessons and get back to them later. If you nail the slow workout but the same lesson’s faster workouts are too difficult, bookmark them and move on.

And, the Billy Jean lesson: it is meant to be difficult, and you aren’t expected to be able to play it the first time. Get back to it after finishing the course and you will be able to see how much progress you have made.

It is also a good idea to practice playing songs. In the course extras there is a list of songs with tabs and sheet music. They are very helpful.

You can also search on YouTube for some of your favourite songs + bass tabs sheet music, and you will likely find videos with the bass tabs. Just by looking at them you will be able to see what is doable at this time, and what you can save for later. But, the more you practice, the better you will get. Don’t worry too much if the lessons feel difficult. It is all part of learning. Some months from now these difficult lessons will be a lot easier. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

That’s awesome! You heard the “call of the bass” and are moving with the groove!

Have fun with the course! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
