Taught myself to play 5 string banjo at 16, then guitar Played coffee houses and eventually bar bands in the 70s & 80s. I played a little bass in a church band since they already had enough guitars in the late 90s. Fast forward 25 years or so and haven’t played much of anything since. I mentioned at my current church about my past music stuff & when the bass player quit I got drafted in to their band. So I did Josh’s course while learning about 4 songs a week, I’m a bit behind the learning curve, but they seem to let it slide. I have a Tobias Growler & Fender Squire Jazz bass, bought the Tobias in 97, the Fender a few months ago, it was 12 years old & never played in a new hard case. This old dog is learning some new tricks. Mike

Hello Dave, and welcome! I’m glad you decided to pick up the bass again! I’m 50 too and I started this Spring. You would be surprised how often people start to play an instrument exactly at our age, and at older ages too. Though it is easier and faster to start young, there is no right or wrong age. It is never too late. The important thing is, you are here! Have fun!

This is so cool! I love it! I’m a huge Star Wars fan as well. I don’t have a favorite character, it would be very hard to decide. I have favorite machines, and favorite quotes. I love the Millennium Falcon, the AT-ATs, the Speeder bikes (as a child I wished I had one of those. Maybe I still wish I had one!).

Awesome to hear you’re a Star Wars fan Andrea! You just gained an extra 10 cool points with me haha  Love it!! I wish I still had all of the action figure and ships from my childhood!! I bet some of those are worth a mint nowadays.

Picked up electric bass while I was in the Army and had a lot of downtime. I had played piano and brass instruments, so I knew how to read music. Just needed to teach myself the notes on the fingerboard. I played the first five frets and then the higher notes on the G string for far too long. I was able to get by, but not excel. After I got serious about learning the rest of the fingerboard, my playing greatly improved. Played in a few bands and then kids happened which put bass on the back burner, but not completely. Got back into playing bass in another band and then started playing for the Baltimore Ravens at home games. I’ve played “Seven Nation Army” a million times, (the Raven’s pump it up song) and it never gets old when you start playing and 70,000 people join in singing it. That lasted about seven years and then I dropped out because of the drummer, total idiot but long story. Took some time off after that was over and then COVID hit. Surprisingly, I played more actively then when everything was shut down than ever. But that band had run its course and was in their final year after I joined. Shame, they were pretty good. Now in another band and hopefully things will stay together for awhile. We’re playing about as often as we want and having to turn down gigs. So, fingers crossed for that band.

Gear-wise, my go to’s are Dingwall Basses and Alien Audio basses. Generally use Mesa Subway amps and cabs, but picked up a Genzler Kinetix 800 recently and that has been my favorite. Really nice tone and feel.

What’s my kryptonite? Walking bass when the chords get complicated or the tempo gets crazy.

Hey there @MultiScaleMale , nice to meet you!

Oh how cool is that! Was it like, a marching band, or did you guys have a band area set up on the sidelines or something?

Welcome! This is freakin awesome. I’m originally from Howard and Anne Arundel counties. I was a senior in high school the year before we got the Ravens, I remember the contest to name the team (same year that Cal Ripken broke the ironman record). I left the area after high school but my daughter lives out in Montgomery county now.
