Welcome along @JamesPrestonUK !
I’m 45, have owned a regular guitar since I was around 15 or 16 and never really got further than a couple scales and a few cowboy and power chords with out of time strumming and transitions. Same deal with the small collection of MIDI keyboards I own. Not gonna lie half the reason I have an interest in music making is all the fun gear there is to buy and build, electronics has been a passion of mine since I was little.
Grabbed an Ibanez Gio GSR100 and a dinky 10W practice amp off Amazon in early January because I wanted an instrument that was rhythm focused. Rhythm has always been a challenge for me and a huge part of why I’ve always failed to grok music making.
Immediately after getting the bass I hit up the Tube of all knowledge and came across Josh’s channel, and bought the course within a couple days.
Currently in module 4 and this is the first instrument I’ve tried that feels like it fits with me. Bass has been a lot more fun than frustration and that’s a totally new and encouraging experience, so of course when I found out I was getting a bonus I grabbed an Ampeg Rocket 110 and a nice fx pedal. I’m already at the point where I can keep time chugging 8ths and learned “With or Without You” before I even got to the lesson.
I enjoy music in general, more on the harder rockier side but I love me some synthpop, country, and rap too. Lately under the influence of my metalhead bro in law I’ve been getting into prog metal[core] and djenty sort of stuff.
In terms of what I’d like to play I think it’d be fun to cut a groovy stoner metal EP at some point as a one man band, think Sleep or Electric Wizard type stuff. DROP / OUT / OF / LIFE / WITH / [bass] / IN / HAND!
Goal is really just to be able to make some music as a “basement” producer, get my nephew jamming along with my brother in law and I, have an excuse to acquire more gear, and have fun doing it all.

Howdy from the PNW!
I picked up my first bass at 30 and after four years of self-teaching and a bit of badass I’m still going for the fun of it. Very glad to have this website to push me along. Would not have felt confident to make the excuse for my new bass without y’all!
