Introduce Yourself! (2025)

Haha, yeah! The red one just pretends to have seen some notes. I think he just has seen a bunch of brutal instruments at the manufacturers workshop…

Hello everyone! Fer here.

I’m a 40 year old from Spain that started playing bass because the other members of The Offspring band were already taken by my friends in school, so I was Greg K. We were 16, and that marked my relationship with music forever. I discovered, then, the secret of ‘the songs within the songs’: the bass lines.

We started looking for cheap gear, a friend got a guitar, another a drums kit, and I got my Academy bass. And the other friend, who picked the other guitar, never did get one. But I already had my bass, so bass it was.

I started going to classes with my friend who got the guitar. These were guitar classes that were also adapted for bass. The teacher was a guitarist that never ever played bass and he simply told me to follow the rhythm hitting root notes. As you can imagine that didn last long.

Time passed and in college there was a friend of a friend that had a band and was looking for a bassist. So I told them that I had a bass and knew some songs (some very basic ones I can’t even remember). I was admitted rather quickly. Looks like the only requisite was to have a bass and two hands. Check and check.

We played for 2 years (2003 to 2004) almost every week, and even performed for a small crowd one summer. We played Metallica, Dream Theater (Peruvian Skies) and Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven). Then we started practicing another song from DT, ‘Beyond this life’. And not long after we started, I quited the band. Or the band quited me. Don’t know for sure, but I believe they did not continue playing. I lost contact with them because of life.

I put my new 5-string Washburn in a closet, and moved it from closet to closet until a few months ago, when my sister gave me 1 month of bass classes as a Christmas present. I started going to classes for a few months and today decided that I like it better when I watch YouTube videos than when I’m at class. So I decided to join. Let’s see how it goes.

Thanks for reading, welcome to the others that wrote, and see you here!

@Ferk You’re in Madrid, but if you ever get up to Burgos, you have to visit the DoctorBass boutique. They’re an awesome bass-oriented store.

Wow, that’s quite a Bass Temple! Not far away, a 2-hours drive. Definitely worth a visit.

I have to say I’m freaking out with some of their prices, 16K€ for a bass? :open_mouth: I have no idea about the criteria that can add and add value to the instrument, to that level I mean

Scarcity. Lead times. How famous the luthier is. Really high end, difficult to source woods.

I’ve paid around 4K € a couple of times, but won’t pay 7,3K € for a Dingwall Super J 5 string (the only one I could find for sale in the EU). So…I asked Gustav, the owner of Lignum in Croatia, to propose a 5-string multiscale bass modeled after the Super J for me. The 5-string fretless that he made for me (shipping next week), cost a little over 2K € with VAT. That’s a great price for a custom bass! You can see some of his bass builds on his YT channel.

Here’s a couple of photos of mine.
