Welcome aboard!
Maybe some day @BassMike…some day.
Steve Harris was the reason I wanted to play bass back when I was a kid.
I’m desperately trying to get my plucking speed up so that I can play the gallop from The Trooper. Nearly there but I’m sure it was easier when I was 18
I’ve got a list of Iron Maiden songs I’d love to be able to play. I use Songsterr because I can understand Tabs…not sheet music. I listen to a lot of different stuff, rock, metal, country, punk, ska…now blues too. I definitely wanna be good enough so someone can recognize what I play or attempt to play without me telling them.
Welcome @rick.hill.0813 !

Welcome @rick.hill.0813
Have fun!
I always played Maiden with three fingers. Harris only uses two. I was surprised to hear him say that.
Now, that’s a nice one… unless you try to play it exactly as Duck Dunn did… a dozen pages transcript ![]()
Have fun ![]()
@rick.hill.0813 welcome to the group
Welcome @AdLadz and @rick.hill.0813! Enjoy the course! ![]()
Hi!
I’ve never introduce myself like that before on a forum. But, I think, in that case it’s different. I’m 38y old, I’m a 2 daughter’s mom, and I’m from Mont-Tremblant (Quebec). English isn’t my native language, but as you see (read, in fact!) I’m not that bad! Lol. Sorry for the looong text.
I’ve heard of bass (without knowing what in was) somewhere in my high school. One of my favourite music group was Sum41 and in their 2nd album, I think, the very last song is called Pain for pleasure. A bassline, simple but sooo effective, it catches my ear. My taught was “What the heck is that soooo great sounding guitar?!!”. Few years later I met a guy in Montreal. When I heard him practicing bass for the first time, I knew. He tried to show me how to put my fingers on fretboard, but I wasn’t ready for that. In my head, I didn’t have any musical talent.
Time goes by… We lived a lot of hard things in past 4 years; Our business burned, my husband got a flesh eating bacteria, our youngest daughter start to be super insecure (fear of lost dad) and gain weight, her and her big sister started to be bullied at school, vehicle problems $$$, (there is more, but you understand our badluck pattern…)… obviously with all that combined, depression wasn’t far away. I tried many different treatments… but always felt empty, without any purpose… It was called a functional depression since i could get out of the bed and do things… but without energy or motivation.
In September 2025, my oldest daughter started high schools in a special music program. To be chosen, she didn’t need to know anything, only have the capacity to hear and recognize different sounds and beats. In almost 1 year of school, I can see so much improvement, her attitude, her results and now the fact she can read music sheets and play (the real transversal) flute. I saw, and still see how music can change positively someone.
Few months ago, I had an appointment with a customer at his home. Since he had to move, he had a lot of things to give before throwing it away. He asked me if I knew someone who play bass. I answered no, but that I knew someone who owns a small music shop and could probably do something with it. So I left with the bass. At that point I was wondering if that wasn’t a life sign… Cords instruments and low sounds have always been my favorites; baselines, deep voices males signers… The distinctive vibration I can feel and not just ear, have a strong calming effect on me. And I thought; if my daughter can learn flute from nothing, why I couldn’t do the same? In addition, I had already told her that if one day I would have to learn an instrument, it would be bass.. So I decided to keep it. The bass wasn’t working so I brought it to our friend’s music shop so he could take a look at it. In the meantime I started to search and watch beginner bass videos. Few weeks later, he told me It wasn’t a quality bass and because of that, it doesn’t really worth the repair price: a lot of corrosion and electric problems inside. I was so sad. We talked and we found a solution; he had a bass he could only keep in demo, since when he received it, box was completely destroyed and with 2 cosmetic imperfections, impossible to sell it the full price. We helped him a lot with his computers until then, and instead of being paid with money, we decided that trade was the way to go. I left with that new bass. The MarkBass MB 4 YELLOW LITTLE BASS.
After watching many many YouTube videos, Josh’s videos were the best. His way to explain, serious but funny, and start from the very beginning… So I bought the course.
One lesson (or 2 if it’s split) with his 3 workouts a day… I’ll start module 5 tonight. Full speed Billy Jean was… kind of hilarious and impossible to play. My god!
I didn’t really count how many lessons I have completed, but I’m around 1 month since I started. Seriously, I feel better now. In hard moments, my small lesson of the night is my motivation to continue to fight. I see a real change, and I’m still learning how to play. I listened the video about goals when learning bass. Mine isn’t to play for fun, or with a bad, or professionally… Mine is to be able to take the emotions I can’t explain in words and express them through music.
I wish Josh, you will read this because I want to thank you. You are not only a great teacher, you also are a great treatment for depression. ![]()
Welcome Franceska! What a lovely introduction. I feel you on being attracted to the bass vibrations. And Josh as a cure for depression <3
Welcome, @Franceska.
Fate definitely wanted you to have that bass! ![]()
Yes he does. He gives us hope. If the Josh we can see online tough videos is only 10% of his IRL personality, his family and friends are very lucky to have someone like him!
This is exactly what I tought. What were the chances, at very beginning, that someone give me a bass…? It’s not a really common “basic” instrument we see almost everywhere like an acoustic guitar. It was a sign, for sure.
Welcome @Franceska
Have feelings.
Welcome @Franceska !
Welcome @Franceska and thank you for sharing your story. You’ll find lots of support and fun here. Enjoy your bass journey
Welcome @Franceska. @JoshFossgreen is very user friendly as you have said. Very touching intro and I wish the best for you all. Now how about a picture of your bass?
