Katana Bass Amp Questions

Thank you for the detailed responses @GingerBug and @Al1885 !!

I think I will try this first then. That will save me money on buying the bluetooth adapter. I am very new to guitar still, so I think these effects should be enough for now. I’ll probably get the foot switch sooner too. Again I really appreciate the detailed information! you guys are great!

I’m just glad to help. I’m new to the amp, so @Al1885 is the expert.

Oh, and FYI, the cable you need to connect the amp to the computer is one of those older USB printer cables, with USB connector on one end and a D-shaped male connector on the other (I don’t know what it’s called).

Where in Arizona are you? You are in Arizona right? How often you come down to SoCal?

I’m in Utah. I have a sister that used to live in Huntington Beach and I used to go visit her there, but she moved a while ago so I don’t get down there very often anymore.

Yep, I have mountain biked in Park City several times, but never snowboarded in Park City… I hear it’s good for that too.

All right. It took a while, but I finally received a response from Roland answering my questions. Here’s their response:

Sorry that there is not a parameter guide with this info for end users, we’ll make a short Knowledge Base article to help out future users.

We contacted our BOSS Product Management team and they could provide this info:

  1. What are the three settings of the Shape button? The manual just says there are three, red, green, and yellow, but doesn’t say what they are specifically.

[ SHAPE ]:

  • Green : Mid-Scoop: 500Hz -12dB
  • Red : Bright: 4kHz +6dB
  • Orange : Green + Red
  1. Same question with the Blend button. Manual says there are three options, but just gives the colors, doesn’t tell us what the options actually are. It says they’re blending in different frequencies, so what are the frequencies?

The BLEND is user definable with three colors to save to:

  1. Same question with the low-mid and high-mid buttons. We’re told we can select three different frequencies for each, but not told what the actual frequencies are.

For reference, below is EQ for each amp types:

AMP FEEL: MODERN

  • BASS : 40Hz Shelving
  • TREBLE : Boost = 3kHz Shelving, Cut = LPF

AMP FEEL: VINTAGE

  • BASS : 70Hz Peaking
  • TREBLE : 5kHz Shelving

AMP FEEL: FLAT

** EQ FLAT*

Lots of interesting things here. But…the Katana 110 combo weighs 37 lbs.

My Fender Rumble Studio 40 weighs 19 lbs. With the GTX-7 pedal, I have a ton of control over the stock 100 presets and can save up to 100 more custom presets.

My GR Bass AT Cube 500 combo and AT Cube 112 cab combined weigh only 30.6 lbs.

My old bones say “thank you”.

I would personally never want effects built in to an amp - I would always want them separate because if they are tied to the amp you lose them when you upgrade or change amps. Sure you cpuld keep it and use the DI out but then it is just the world’s least convenient multieffects unit.

Similarly for an amp like this I am not seeing much advantage of Class AB vs Class D. If it were a 300W head, sure, but this is a small combo amp.

Just my opinion, YMMV.

So I agree, a simpler and lighter amp would make more sense to me. Just shy of 40lbs is a lot for a 110W amp.

To each their own, but I traded in a Rumble 100 for this amp, and yes it weighs more, but it also sounds a lot better. So that’s a good trade in my book.

It would cost thousands of dollars to get this many effects in pedals. The great thing about this amp is I can try all these effects and find what I like and don’t like. If I ever do need a bigger amp, which is unlikely, I will then only need to buy the few pedals/effects I’ve learned that I like. I’m saving a ton of money in the end, if you think about it.

Anyway, this thread is to help people who have the amp, so really not the best place to bag on it.

The Katana 110 is a 60watt amp and is sweet, 40lbs is no big deal if your not an emo and did any exercise in your life.

The 210 is 48 pounds, 136 watts. It’s loud AF. I always practice in the 1 watt mode, and it’s still plenty loud.

Yeah the Rumbles are really light, but I never loved the sound of mine, and no matter how I adjusted it, I could never get the sounds I wanted out of it. To each their own.

The Katana is noticeably heavier than my Rumble 100 was. I could see it being a problem if you have back issues. I do, but I’ve learned proper lifting technique in my physical therapy, so moving my amp around is good practice/workout. :joy:

Even without effects, the tone shaping is awesome. 4-band EQ where you can define the frequencies of the low mids and high mids is really nice.

Or… there’s this and I think the effects are more customizable in their multi effect than through the Katana. Could be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere in the reviews when I was researching the 10.

My Ampeg RB-210 is 37 lbs with the roller wheels on.

That’s true as far as the buttons on the amp, but if you use the app, you can adjust all the effects parameters. The idea is you use the app to set up your effects. Once you’ve done that, you can switch between them using the buttons on the amp or the footswitch.

I’d bet it’s the same app in that case (this is the desktop client on Mac).

I recently got a Katana 110 and like it very much, however I haven’t been using it that often because I haven’t learned how to dial it in very well. That’s because I’d rather play bass than mess with knobs or comp screens.
Little by little I’m getting better at arranging its sounds but I am yet to spend much time learning. Its time will come but just not today.
My Kustom 35 I use the most, then the 100 watt Yorkville which they both sound really good and if I want ridicules’ volume with way to much punch I’ll plug in the Fender M80 160 watts which doubles as an end table, which I totally dig.
The Katana 110 I will still recommend to anyone looking for an amp in that wattage range… :jbass: :sunglasses:

I wasn’t bagging on the amp out of nowhere, I was agreeing with TheMaartian and explaining why. I personally don’t care at all about this amp either way, except for how I pointed out why it wouldn’t be my choice, and that it was just my opinion. I am also predisposed to like Roland and Boss products so this isn’t general brand hate either.

Well ok yeah good point

LOL even worse at 40lbs

Well, I guess the army didn’t count then because for me, 40lbs for a 60W is frickin hilarious.

You know, there’s a lot of easy comebacks on your quote…
I’m laughing while typing thinking of a few that would work well on stage,
but I won’t share incase it leads to more anger chatter.
Bass… :jbass:
Where’s the bass? :jbass:
I was playing The Hip before this and having a take 5 moment and visiting the forum.
I’ll be playing some Rush today and more Hip at least for an hour.
Are you smashing any tunes today? if so what’s on the menu?

There usually are

Who’s mad? I was more lmao… people seem sensitive about this amp.

Yeah! Basically gonna try and practice some punk and post-punk, also try to get some work in on a 6-string I am upgrading to give to our guitarist.
