delightfully excessive, methinks
Pam stands and addresses the group, āMy name is Pam and I have MBDā.
Group chants, āHello Pamā.
Pam, āIām sorry Iāve missed so many MBD Anonymous meetings, I know I shouldnāt have. Iām afraid Iāve slippedā.
Group gasps, āWhat did you do, Pam?ā
Pam: "Today I had some time to kill, so I wandered into my favorite local music store and chatted with Fred, the Bass specialist about my desire to someday own a stand up electric bass. I know I shouldnāt have.
Member of group: āWhat happened?ā
Pam: āHe showed me the newly released Ibanez UB804 4-String Electric Upright, with Mahogany Oil Burst.
As I stroked and caressed it, I experienced a serious GAS attack. I tried to leave, but Fred had already plugged it into an amp and pulled me over to it, asking me to try it out. I played a couple of quick arpeggios and scales, and savored the beautiful, low rich tonesā.
Member of the crowd asks, āWere you able to escape?ā
Pam:"No, I succumbed. I gave him my debit card and paid a 20% deposit to lay-it-away.
Crowd murmurs for a minute, then one person asks, āDo you have photos?ā
āYes,ā I reply, āHere they areā.
That looks awesome @PamPurrs!
Not something I had considered but now
And welcome back to the MBD fold
Thanks, Iāve been thinking alot about it, ever since I started playing fretless. I know @Lanny mentioned it a couple times also.
It was an interesting feeling being able to play without 12 lbs of bass guitar strapped across my shoulders.
Iām interested to know how youāll go with this. Iām imagining it to be quite different from a guitar type bass to play. Iāve no doubt youāll master it
That sounds fantastic! And Iād never even considered the bow option! WOW !
It looks and sounds wonderful.
Iāve actually got GAS for something Iād never even thought of until you posted it.
And again WOW!
Oh oh @PamPurrs,
How did you explain this serious acquisition to Sara?
I think you are awesome and canāt wait to hear some of those deep tones from it when you get your new baby home.
Cheers brian
Pam that looks amazing, and looks good on you. Cant wait to hear you play it as Iām sure that you will master it quickly. The demo video sounds great are you going to get a bow as well?
Jamie
Oh yeah. Really nice groove.
I recently looked at the prices of double bass and decided that Iām probably too small for that huge instrument anywayā¦ So upright bass might be something in the future. Still gotta get better at the normal one. But I like upright somehow better than fretless and I canāt give a reason why. Itās just ārightā to me.
Looks awesome. Speaking as a lefty, thatās the kind of symmetry I like to see. Just swap the strings over, and Iād be good to go!
Yes, eventuallyā¦ but thatās another thing I would have to learn.
I told her the money I used to put it on lay-away was the same amount I saved on the great deal I got on the laptop that I just ordered for her.
There was no further discussion on the matter
Great stuff! Iām sure youāll love it!
They have the most amazing tone.
I have a normal one, so to speak and while I mainly play electric bass, itās still lovely to get the upright out now and again to have some fun. Itās great going over bass lines you know on an upright just to check the difference out and what extra sound it can produce.
Also if youāre going to start arcing as well as piezo, then you simply must learn the very easy jaws theme
And get used to losing half of the skin on your right index finger!!!
nice one, been ogling these as well, always wanted to try the Stagg EBD
@quadfather I actually considered getting a ānormalā acoustic stand up bass until I actually played one at the store, and then envisioned myself lugging this monster around in my little car. The real deal killer was when I looked at the price tags. $4,000 and up!
This little Ibanez electric upright fits my needs perfectly, and it sounds great!
Absolutely agree. The one I have is definitely not very portable. It will just fit in my car in the case. And I mean just. And my car isnāt big. The case for it is absolutely ridiculous too. I canāt even fit it in most rooms upright!
And yes theyāre so damn expensive too. The decent ones apparently are the really old ones where all the different types of wood have had a long time to resonant with each other (this is what I read anyway - Iāve not really got much info on them myself). Mine was around the Ā£600 mark and is clearly entry level, but it still completely satisfied my needs. I darent look at upgrading it haha!
Youāve made me curious now. I need to have a go on one of those electric ones. I bet the setup is better too. You need iron hands to play mine and itās already been setup!
But all this aside, to be able to use the bow and play jaws simply overrides all this
Yeah, Iād love to play the Jaws theme on this. Iāll have to see if I can find the music sheet for it. The link you posted only has tab.
ā¦but first, gotta finish paying on my lay-away, and THEN I have to shop for a cello bow. (Oh dear, more GAS!)
Iām pretty sure itās just E and F but thereās other stuff going on elsewhere - It might be strings. Canāt remember. But itās good fun anyway.
Ah yes, youāve got to get a bow too. And decide on french or German as well. And youāll need a quiver for it. And some resin! oh man, Iāve seen bows selling for thousands. Good luck and see you in the gas thread haha!!
I recently just saw a video on youtube where Ray Chen tried a āveganā bow, which is made of synthetic hair and carbon fiber which was pretty decent in price tag. let me look for the video.
taadaaaa
