My First Pedalboard!

Yeah. This review was so good, the first thing I did was start checking out JHS pedals.

I assume that’s his goal with this YT channel  but yeah I’ve been on this channel a few times before and the guy knows what he’s talking about.

I second and third these comments! I had one of his, a tubescreamer copy. I swapped it out and nearly instantly regretted it.

I have a real old Ibanez TS9, made in Japan and fitted with the original vintage JRC4558D. I’ve modded it a little bit to add a bass boost switch. this thing sounds insane with a guitar (but not much with a bass).

One of the pedals I had back in '80’s. If I knew then what I know now? I am insanely envious!

Some gear changes for me:

  • Bought a real EHX Big Muff Pi.
  • Bought a real EHX Bass Clone.

From playing around on the Zoom it’s clear I will always, forever want these, so might as well face the facts and just buy them.

  • Sold my SCR-DI

Partially to fund the above but also I just ended up disliking how fiddly its overdrive is. The thing sounds great otherwise though.

So I am trying to decide if I want to buy a BDI-21 now or save a little more and get an EHX Battalion. I really like the sound of both. What I am currently thinking is buy the BDI-21 now and use it until I get a Battalion later. Or keep using it forever, who knows.

not really surprised about this …

No regrets, sold it for 500 yen (~$5) less than I bought it for

yeah that’s fine, at least you gave it a try

about the BDI21 you know my though about it, and about the Battalion I might get one for Christmas. Same “sound family” I think. but don’t get fooled by the price : the BDI21 is really a good catch. If I were you I would get one …

Yeah ever since I heard that A/B video with it and a BDDI I have been convinced.

I also found a ridiculously cheap compressor with both true bypass and apparently decent noise. Might pick one up too.

bass part is at the end

I have a Kokko booster pedal. I almost never use it with a bass but as a guitar player I’m a really big fan of boosters, and this little Kokko thing is cool. not the best booster over there but, for the price, it’s more than OK. I don’t know about the compressor.

If you see a DOD FX84 at a good price it might be a good catch. That’s the compressor I use and by far the best I have owned. it’s pretty impressive for its price (I paid mine 30€). anyway the settings are a little bit strange. it’s a DOD after all.

Thanks for the tip!

So, another question for you gearheads while I am still, still, trying to wrap my head (even partially) around all the pedals and effects…

Any thoughts on the Tech21 Sansamp Bass Fly Rig? It seems to have fewer options and whistle and bells than, say, a Boss GT-1B, but is more expensive. Why? Better quality? Sturdier? More fancy brand?

Thx!

Man, these are some nice pedals. Now we need new picture of your setup!

Other than your dislike of the Scrambler, was the death knell for this pedal because you had all of the connectivity options in other devices?

Thanks, will do when they get here. I’ve wanted the bass clone since I learned that Hooky has been using an original EHX Clone Theory to get his sound since the '70s.

Well, kind of. It’s got a lot of positives - it’s built like a tank, it sounds great, it makes for an awesome standalone device due to its headphone out and aux in with aux volume, etc.

But in the end, I had most of it on other things, yeah, and though the preamp is good, without a more usable overdrive, it’s basically an expensive Ampeg amp sim with a DI.

I do still need a DI, and I really like the sound of the Battalion, which I will probably eventually get. And the BDI-21 sounds great and you can’t beat the price there either.

So in the end, I basically just decided to trade it out for other gear.

This reminds me - what power supply is everyone using? The cheap Donner one is tempting but I worry about PSU noise.

I’m using a power supply that I built about 15 years ago. The important point is to choose a PSU with fully isolated grounds for each power output, to avoid noisy ground loops.

Yeah that’s what I am worried about, the Donner claims to be isolated but apparently is not.

Found a teardown, looks like they share a common ground, but they put a coil on each out to act as a choke and reduce line noise. So not isolated, but with some cheap line noise reduction.

So probably less noisy than a chain but more than real isolated outs.
