New Bass or New Amp?

Cant order anything from the US. Customs and VAT are ruthless here.

Much cheaper ordering a 550€ pack from Thomann.

Ie: If I was to orrder a 3000€ bass from Japan… VAT + Customs on it would total abou 1300€. Nearly half of another bass on top.

This matters much less than you think. Most bass combo amps have rolloff in the 50Hz range anyway so even with them you are mostly hearing harmonics.

Yeah this is what I do.

Bass → DAI (Mackie mixer in my case) → direct monitor to monitors ('phones or JBL 305PmkII)
PC → Amp and cab sims → DAI out to monitors

You guys make me crazy :stuck_out_tongue:

I have no intention of overspending in gear just to record at home with minimal quality.

Was planning on something simple… Bass - Amp - PC or Bass - Amp - DAI - PC…and now my list is growing and price also!

You already have an audio interface. Put in some more effort to make it work

That means: more to spend on a PA. And maybe some nice software effects for your DAW…

Yeah… but where?

Going back to Bass → DAI Will return the louder hum that the Behringer PA/DI has diminished.

That’s where my noise is… you hear it on speakers or headphones, through Direct Monitor.

2 basses, multiple cables, wife’s electric guitar… noise always there… just better now.after all the exercises.

Pedals in question:

I still think you should (re)start at 0 and work your way up.
I still find it unlikely that the audio interface is the problem.
If you think it is - order a new one and try with exactly the same setup.

Otherwise: keep using the Behringer PA/DI and just add the PA, just as I said. And invest in some VSTs. I refer to @howard again. He might have ideas.

To start, someting like Amplitube, BIAS F/X or TH-U is great. You can play with so many effects, pedal and amps with those bundles, it’s crazy!
Wait for discounts though. I got them cheap and spent hours trying out so many things (I never use ^^).

With that in mind, would you do this one or this one (bearing in mind I’ve got my Ampeg SGT-DI)? I’m most likely picking an amp up this weekend.

Get the amp and see if it solves the problem. :grinning::+1:

Buying a real amp is always the right answer despite what @howard says :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I think it depends on the answer of this question: do you want to gig or do you want to play at home, with your bass and background tracks?

If you want to play your bass and background tracks through one speaker, a PA (or monitors) is the right system for you!

Yes, I think finally the right questions that @Megatronpt should consider and try to answer are emerging! It’s all about what goal you want to achieve (mostly) - only at home? Also on the road? Often, less often? Smaller venues? Larger venues? When at home: headphones only? Or rather not be a slave of 'phones? And so on…

There is no “one size fits all solution” and some doubling of functionality (with the corresponding spending of extra funds) might have to occur, but perhaps not right now and only along the way.

But, yeah, find out what you really need to develop and enjoy your bass playing at this point in time! From the title and first posts, it seems you want to pamper yourself for your birthday (which is quite OK), but were all over the place with respect to what to get (and some of your options seemed to work in different directions)

EHX Batallion has entered the party.

  • Removed BDI
  • Inserted EHX Batallion (props to @faydout here!)

Setup:
Clicking better with EHX Batallion vs BDI… but … there’s still that ssssssssss there…
Slight gate
Flat EQ, Volumes at 60%
Bass 100%, Bass EQ Flat
DAI gain 75-80%

“Fun” fact… I’m bored of fighting this noise… might just jump to amp(Rumble 15) and play there… and use PC only for Yousician… and will eventually record somewhere else… maybe laptop.

Maaaaaan - never give up!

Some motivation:

That sounds like distortion, so likely a gain issue. Did you fumble your knobs?

This could be lack of experience on my part, but the gain on DAI seems really high to me. I don’t know that I’ve ever set mine higher than 50% and that’s on all passive basses.

That was to see if the noise was there. If I lower it, I can still hear… but harder.

And you ONLY heard it when you play???! Or also when you just do nothing?
Try not playing anything , first not touching anything … and then touch the strings, the bridge and finally the knobs. Only touching, not playing.
Record that!

No bass or cable plugged. On EHX connected to DAI.
Every gain below 50%

“ssssssssssss” is there… recordable.

That’s of course a mistake!

When I have no bass plugged in my Motu M4 (but the cable is), I have noise too.

So, the real test is: cable and bass plugged in, no playing. Touching stuff!
