One thing I have always thought was cool about your king is that he will occasionally go fly random KLM flights (he’s a qualified airline pilot) and announce himself to the passengers as “Good morning flight 123, this is your King.”
Like, imagine how terrified you would be to learn King Charles was even driving your cab, much less flying you anywhere.
That is actually cool!
I might be a little unfair to him, as I know him from my time as a student in Nijmegen. He lived around the corner and was a good friend of the sister of my girfriend at the time,
In Holland he was known as “prins pilsje” (= “prince beer”), not without reason … I think I saw his car twice in a Dutch gracht (= channel), cause he had one too many!
Haha so not seeing a problem with your king yet compared to some others then
To be fair tho Ol’ Chuck is a qualified chopper pilot also.
I am not sure but I think he qualified on fast jets?
Yeah Harriers I think?
That said - you volunteering to hop in a plane with him?
Actually, no:
Charles gave up flying after crash-landing a BAe 146 in Islay in 1994, as a passenger who was invited to fly the aircraft; the crew was found negligent by a board of inquiry
I wish all royals were more like prince Philip!
And then there’s Prince Andrew. AKA “the one that got caught, so far.”
F#ck Andrew! Just saw a documentary about him. Absolutely disgusting!!!
Also he looks a little like this now (to get back to the original topic):
You mean racist? Yeah no thanks. There are enough of those already in the world.
I really don’t think he was racist, at least I hope not!
But some of his statements have not aged well, that’s true.
Other statements are plain gold. He was the Jeremy Clarkson of royalty!
He was racist but I lived in the UK and a lot of people are. Also Clarkson is a clown.
Yeah it’s not that Phillip’s “gaffes” didn’t age well… many were never ok.
Clarkson - it’s really unclear how many of his “controversies” were self promotion and how many him showing his true self, but his bizarre latching on to Meghan was just vile. I’m not a fan of royalty but damn dude.
Nah Phil the Greek was good value, n one he talked to ever complained- just the Karens
We are going to disagree. I grew up in a racist country and it’s ugly. Nothing to be proud of.
I saw racism everywhere in the military. 12 years of it and it was depressingly ingrained.
Yeah. A friend of mine, African American that lives in wuppertal Germany (one of the most boring cities over here) , told me about life before he lived in Europe, and how he is not afraid to be shot by the police anymore or how his daughter gets proper education now.
I understand that things are different for you and how that must affect your view…
We can be relaxed about being non-pc sometimes, cause we don’t have those systematic issues that some other countries have…
As long as people make stupid jokes and not try to become president, I am very relaxed about things…
As if by magic, here’s the news from Britain this morning. Reform UK (political party) secretly filmed making racist comments e.g. calling the Prime Minister a ‘f**king Paki’.
Yeah, we also have those kinds of politicians, unfortunately.
Even worse: we have a growing number of voters that agree with them, both in the country I live in (Germany) and the country I come from (Holland).
But again: we don’t have the kind of structural discrimination (anymore/yet), like some other countries.
I live in a very multicultural environment, and of course there are always reasons to complain/improve, but none of my friends fear for their lives, got bad education (except cause they were lazy and preferred to party) or have less chances to get a good job (although the working situatiuon could be improved).
My aforementioned friend told me that his biggest problem with racism in Europe was, when he wanted the school of his daughter NOT to use “Pippi Longstocking” as required reading. Cause of this: Pippi Longstocking books charged with racism | Children and teenagers | The Guardian
He politely discussed this with the school … and they use a redacted version now. Problem solved!
I think this is a good indication of the kind of country we live in. Things could be better, and might get worse. But we don’t have all those extremes like in some other countries … and can make bad jokes without anybody really getting hurt. That counts for something!
