P Bass (Sire P5) and Jazz Bass (CV)?

Hello all

I have a Squier CV Bass and am thinking of getting a Sire Marcus Miller P5 P Bass as well. Obviously, as a beginner, I don’t NEED two basses but I am finding the CV a little heavy. The P5 appears to be very well regarded but just wondering if any of you have experience with it? Unfortunately I am not able to get to a shop to try it out but have seen one on eBay. Or…is it simply not worth getting a second bass at my level?

Thanks everyone :folded_hands:

At any level it’s justifiable to get a second bass :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:. I don’t have any personal experience with that particular bass but from what I have read and heard they are quite nice.

Both are not exactly heavy bass maybe by a pound at most. They are practically the same avg weight. It’s actually pretty average even Fender most expensive is about the same weight. Same goes for the Sire, Ibanez, Yamaha.

You can own as may basses as you like regardless of skillz. I’m a living proof

To give you and idea of a heavy P bass, my Steve Harris has Maple body and Maple neck, and it weight a hair over 12 pound. It’s sitting next to my lightest bass the 5 string MusicMan Feugo and that bass weight 7.5 lbs. It took me a while to get used to that bass because it’s too light.

I’ve got a Sire Marcus Miller P5 and it is a great Bass. Here’s a pic (though it’s been modded):

If you’re really concerned about weight, you might want to consider a P6 - they weigh under 8lbs and sometimes under 7lbs.

At the risk of relevance.. I have what might be the opposite of OP.. a fender MIM PBass and a Sire V3 jazz bass. The sire is definitely my “heavy” bass.

Thanks @Bassic . I really like the P6 but am trying to keep the costs down and they only offer a lefty in black which is ok but I think I would rather not spend nigh on £600 for it!

Mine’s always a holiday. But it would be especially special if a large box from Cali were delivered to my front door, though.

Is that a local supplier? Sire’s website doesn’t seem to indicate any color restrictions for LH models. Just curious. P6 models don’t seem to be widely available yet.

Yes this is on Thomman which seems to be the only local place (well Germany) which offers LH models and that is in Sandblasted Black. Quite elegant actually but just a stretch too far £-wise.

My Reverend weighs a little over 7 lbs, my Revstar is heavier. Yeah, its kind of a shock to go from one of my Yamahas to the Reverend. Almost too light.

Same, I’m on the 30th. Mine is a holiday for me.

Is it so much that it’s heavy? Or do you maybe need a thicker/more padded strap?

Or is it neck-heavy, and would benefit from modifying it with lightweight tuners?

But I will still enable you on getting a Sire P5. I strongly considered one for a while.

Thanks @BeerBaron . The seller has just confirmed the weight of the P5 being 9.04lbs which I don’t think is all that much lighter than the CV! I do have a good padded strap but do get neck dive. Maybe the answer is to get some lighter tuners and save some money!

I’ve got a few of these @StreetwalkingCheetah and they’re excellent. Neoprene, so it doesn’t dig into your shoulder and a little bit of give. 4” wide to spread the load and super comfortable.

Our beloved Josh recommended it and I’ve had it 4 years now. Won’t buy anything else.

I’d get the mustang. Preferably with the mustang pickup. Squier makes a really good one. 30” scale
Or even better find your local Preowned market for a Yamaha motion bass, a 32” medium scale of just pure goodness cult
