Any experience with Phil Jones PB 200 and Phil Jones cab 17? I’m old, weight is attractive.
I have several PJB products:
Vintage Briefcase amp
BG-120 Bass Cub Pro combo & CAB-47 cabinet
Every single stinkin’ thing they make is amazing.
I am a bit concerned you want a 200W amp head and a 100W cab though, that’s a receipe for damage.
Is there a reason you don’t want to go with a combo?
Are you planning on lugging things around?
What are your use cases? 100W is way more than enough for home use and very small combo settings. I got the 47 cab to allow the BG-120 to go up to 200W and I don’t need it for a single thing, I just found it on a super deal.
Yes, I do lug it around. In their advertising they show the combo together. I checked the impedance and it is possible.
At 77 weight can be an issue and the carbon fiber amps are very expensive.
Are you looking for something to perform with or just play at home? Going from the wattage it seems performing ? There are a lot of Fender Rumble fans out there …they’re light weight.
We do small gigs in nursing homes etc. Fenders are not so easy to lug around, lightweight when you are a guy or young. I could have even 10 years ago, but now I’m a 77 year old female and my tender rumble is just too much weight.
It’s fine in this case. The PB delivers 120 Watts RMS at 8 Ohms (this is within safety margins). There is also a subsonic filter in the PB that prevents cone blowout.
This is a really nice combo, IMO. I’ve had a few PJB products in the past and they all sounded amazing. I’m sure the Phil Jones CAB-17 won’t disappoint. I had the CAB-27 with a PJB head D-400.
All Phil Jones amps sound much more “clean” compared to the Fender Rumble. It handles any pedal great because of this, but it is something to keep in mind.
if, and it’s a big if, it has enough output for what you want then it is an excellent choice. there isn’t a really great way of determining this ahead of time and i would say it’s well worth trying it out. i own a couple of their products, the nanobass practice amp and 2 C4 cabs and i am very happy with them.
Have you thought about the BG-120?
like John_E, I have several PJB products.
I love my BG-120, so much that I haven’t used my PB-800 head in over a year. I pair it with either a C-4 or C-8 cab. By itself, it’s 120 watts. With the extension cab, it puts out 240 watts. Plus it has a DI out for PA.
Here it is with a C-4 cab.
I’m looking a getting a C-2 cab, for smaller gigs.
Desribing the gigs that you are doing, I think the BG-120 by itself, or couple with a C-2 cab would be all you need.
Thanks for your feedback.
Thanks for your ideas, will check.
It’s not Phil Jones, but if weight is an issue the Fender Rumbles are pretty lightweight and have a good sound. Just throwing it out there. the Rumble 100 is 22 lbs, and the 200 is 34 lbs.
I’m curious about the double four. I’m looking for something for bluegrass jams and practice probably. It’s hard to find something small that sounds good.
This is what PJB does so so well - but you do pay for their magic.
Ah then you will be fine
Have you had any chance to compare it to the Fender Rumble 40? I wanted to buy Bg-120, but was hesitant because of the 5” drivers (though 2 of them), and that’s why I purchased Rumble 40.
I had the 40. PJB 120 is way way betrer
My bass tutor uses a PJB amp. I can’t believe the sound for something so physically small, it’s amazing.
Fun fact: Phil Jones himself is actually Welsh, like @Barney and me.
I just made rarebit sandwiches this past weekend. I would never try and pass mine off as authentic though. I used sourdough and lamb with a local Colorado stout and tomato.
Thank you ![]()
Is that why all the amps are smaller?
