Pickups and Strings - find your bass' tone

Yeah, in my brief flirtation with lunacy from listening to the Other Forum That Shall Not Be Named, (regarding using flats on a 51p neck because rounds are steel and cause too much wear) I checked and saw most flats are SS (Roto is monel) and realized the folly I was headed into

Apparently I have GHS Precision Flats in .040 .060 .080 .100 .128 and they are stainless steel. For some reason I thought they were something else :woman_facepalming:t2: Well all right then, back to ignoring the strings on my GWB35 :joy:

I’d just like to say that I have absolutely NO idea what anyone is talking about in this thread. I’mma just gonna sit over here and fiddle with these shiny knobs. Maybe fiddle with the amp knobs too. Hey, maybe I should take up the fiddle.

IS IT TIME TO GO HOME YET?

Give it time. A little string knowledge is a dangerous expensive thing.

I decided to put new strings on the TRBX, and kind of upgrade to NYXL from the EXL that supposedly came stock.
It’s night and day… I have no idea if I managed to degrade the strings in less than three months or if they were somehow defective, or if they weren’t EXL at all, but now the bass sounds pretty ALIVE :love_you_gesture:

NYXL are my favorite string.

It’s possible you wore out the EXL’s! I changed mine on my first bass after playing for about three months; I was playing so much the rounds had definitely gone dead.

Yeah, I know
I think it was your post that made me consider the NYXL for the first time.

But I’m a bit surprised that three months are enough to wear the strings out… not that they lost the new zingy sound, that’s normal I guess, but the volume in general felt very low.
I’ve been practicing or playing about 45 minutes daily with this bass since mid-July… Hopefully, the NYXL will last longer

That’s not surprising at all for rounds used that much.

Good to know, now I feel more justified in my decision.
I should stop listening to guitar players saying that bass strings last forever

Full stop right there.

it probably seems like forever when guitar strings played that much last a month or likely less :joy:

Yeah, I used to wear out a set of EB guitar strings in about 10 hours of use (max). NYXL would last longer though so they’re the default on my Strat.

My guitar strings last an awful lot longer these days because I pretty much only play bass.
I really should sell the Les Paul.

Here’s a P bass with D’addario chrome flats

Not bad! But that would sound so much better with rounds.
