Playing a song the "right" way

People always worry about or criticize others for not playing songs the “right” way but here’s a song where the person who wrote it plays it 3 different ways and the one he played live isn’t even correct

Beato!

Did rick kindly correct the actual rockstar on all their mistakes? Maybe mansplain them a bit?

Actually Dominic Miller does most of the talking/playing and Rick doesn’t talk much at all. It’s probably the best interview I’ve seen with Dominic or about this song.

I can’t remember which and I’m too lazy to check but there was someone not too long ago that actually did forget how to play their song and Rick had to show them

That had to be the moment Beato had been waiting for his whole life

It made me laugh that he started playing the original chord live just to get back at that YouTuber

I think that was Paul Davids

That really got me thinking…

Aren’t we doing this to a large extent here on this site?? Of course, with all the best intentions, but still… Gosh, it’s so easy to be mansplaining and not even realizing it anymore… :open_mouth: :grimacing:

I explain things to people all the time, every day, it’s part of my job. I never expect that anyone knows what I’m going to tell them so I always take the time to explain things clearly. Mansplaining isn’t just explaining things to someone, it’s explaining things to them in a patronizing/condescending way… but as communication requires both a sender and a receiver, not everyone will perceive an explanation as “mansplaining”. If I explain something to a woman about 3 ph power and VFDs and I don’t know that she’s an electrical engineer, I’m not “mansplaining” it to her just because she’s a woman, I’m explaining it because the vast majority of people, even electricians (whom are almost all male) don’t know much about VFDs and 3ph power.

So no, I don’t think it’s easy to mansplain something to someone without realizing… though it may be easy for someone to perceive that they’re being “mansplained” to based on their personal experiences and biases.

Yes, I realize “explaining” is not the same as “mansplaining”, but it can be a very thin line in between those indeed. It can happen just out of pure enthusiasm - just ask my wife

But, yes, the patronizing aspect is especially slippery (“what many people don’t realize…”).

Anyway, it just got me thinking. I was the victim of it the other day at a dinner (where I couldn’t just leave), so I perhaps got a bit more aware of it (in my own behavior not least).

Nope, we are pretty broad minded on this site, open to new ideas and different opinions. We discuss and disagree, but we don’t make the broad and incorrect pronouncements Beato does.

Agreed - to a very large extent!

Not sure about that one, to be honest.

But also nothing to use more powder on

For example, Beato says the guitar solo is dead, rock is dead, etc. Has entire videos with rants about this stuff. I was listening to another reviewer this morning who said Rock isn’t dead, it’s moved south to Mexico. Beato has a very narrow view of music limited to English speaking bands.
