Post your covers! (2019-2022)

Nice staccato playing @sfadams! That is a major workout on the fretting hand for sure. Well played.

excellent cover @sfadams ! as always, I really like your attitude while playing. that’s truely excellent.

constructive critisim maybe ? a few “early attack syndrom”, very few, when you go to the trebly side of the rythm. also, sorry to say that but I don’t like your bass tone on this one, it’s too much focused in the midrange in my opinion. it sounds like a bass plugged straight into a DAI.

again very personnal positions and I say all that in the hope it will helpful to go further. the cover is excellent overall.

Great cover @sfadams! Never heard the song before, but who doesn’t like a 12 bar progression? Superb playing!

Thank you @Jazzbass19, @PamPurrs, @bjams, @terb, @Noisembryo, @Mac, @JerryP for all your kind words (and everybody else who gave the cover a like).

A few more specific replies:

This song was one of BF’s bigger hits outside of Roxy Music. It was written as a love letter to his then-girlfriend, Jerry Hall. But Ms. Hall promptly ignored the song, leaving Mr. Ferry for some bloke called Mick Jagger. Quite what she saw in all these multi-millionaire rock stars is beyond me.

Go for it! A great song where the bass carries a lot of the melody.

Well, I don’t own pedals or an amp. So, straight into the interface is all I can do. Sorry about that. You are quite correct that I gave the upper and lower mids a boost (see below), that was to make sure the bass punched through the mix as it does on the original recording. But I take your point and maybe I’ll ease off this idea a bit next time. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks Pam. I blame Josh for this. It might be the only part of my technique which is remotely close to being ‘textbook’.

Very nice one, indeed!

no problem at all  I see you use a VST ; a simple amp sim VST would help a lot ! I’m sure there are free ones that sound good !

The SHB-1 on a pop song. That’s just Subhuman

Happy to take critique and learn, but I’m not convinced the tone I got sounded so poor that it really needs an amp sim.

Speculating, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the bassist on ‘Let’s Stick Together’ recording was DI’d in the studio, and had his mids boosted on the desk to stand out in the track as he did (OK … maybe not boosted to quite the extent I did).

Oh the brutality!

Really though SHB-1 is at its heart a nice tube amp sim. It could give nice warm round tones too. Though it does do fat and angry well too.

You’re probably right that the session player was DI’d in but that doesn’t mean they were without at least some kind of tone shaping, even back then. The nice thing about modern amp and cab sims is it is a simple way to make the DI’d instruments sound less flat and more three-dimensional, to stretch an analogy.

That’s just a meta-comment, not a particular comment on your cover. I thought it was great. Not familiar with the original so I can’t comment on the tone being similar or not.

I’d have amp and cab simmed it, but that’s personal preference.

I decided to experiment on this one by lowering bass of the original track using Izotope RX8 to make more room for my own bass line.

So this time my bass is actually mixed lower than original track but it’s still really audible. Tell me what you think about this approach and I hope you enjoy this classic 80’s feel good hit.

Very nice @Noisembryo, nice groove on a favorite classic. I’d say your bass is the perfect level to serve this song!

May I ask why you don’t just strip the bass completely in RX8? That’s what I normally do. Maybe your way is better, I don’t know… (shrug)

excellent cover @Noisembryo ! the mix is fine to me.

Depends on the song, sometimes that might pull out some low end information I don’t want.

Master Rebalance in Ozone seems much less drastic (and likely accurate) than Music Rebalance in RX8. For one thing, it’s real time; however it also will only dump by 6dB.

Is there a site to get tracks with different parts pulled out, or do you have to do it yourself?

Not really, no…you may find some isolated tracks on YT or even whole stems of some songs.

Would be cool if when people made one here they could post the “baseless” files for others to be able to use. Not sure if possible though.
