Post your covers! (2019-2022)

Ending the week here in Middle Georgia with a little “Lynyrd Skynyrd”,… One of my favorite Southern Rock bands to cover…

https://youtu.be/F8Ps6QVBJ84
I mixed this one to the song, so the bass may be a little light in the mix for some, but if you listen through decent speakers or a headset, it’ll sound much better…

As typical, I learned to play the song totally by ear. I decided to try to play the song using as much of the fretboard as possible since there appeared to be a lot of open notes in the song… doing this proved to be one of the more challenging aspects of this cover… As such, I decided to use my Fender P bass with the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders and a Hipshot Badass bridge, and also replaced the flats I had on it with a used set of D’Addario NYXL’s for a bit brighter tone.

Anyway, as usual, any and all comments are appreciated…

Keep on Thumpin’!

Thanks @Mac…. One of my favorite genres. Took a bit of patience to get the P set up the way I wanted it - not just with the PuP’s and strings, but also how the action is set up.

Thanks @John_E…. I’ve had this song in my song list to do for quite awhile. Guess I just had to get in the right mood to cover it:grinning:. Really had to do some messing around with the action on the P in order to attain the right tones and punch that I was looking for in the mix. I’m running a pretty low action (on the borderline of fret buzz), but needed to be able to move quickly around the fretboard in order to play the song the way I wanted…. Oh, and a little “Fast Fret” always helps:smiley::smiley:. And yes, it is a really fun song to play!!:+1::+1:

Thanks Toby @T_dub…. They are certainly well loved down here in the south where Southern Rock rules!!:smiley:.

Thanks Laurent @terb…. I did want to make sure I was mixing for the song while at the same time highlighting the bass line. Wanted that perfect balance in punch and tone so a lot went into attack and the use of my fingers on both hands - kinda like playing a classical acoustic guitar.

yeah that’s what I always try to do ; depending on the song, it can be tricky. but here your mix is perfect in my opinion.

Thanks @Ed…. I don’t use pedals or anything. Just my DAI into Garage Band on my iMac. Simplicity…

Skynyrd Rules!! Great cover Lanny! Great tone and groove!
Question: I saw you using your left hand thumb a lot, were you muting or fretting the E string?

Thanks @JerryP… I always use my fretting thumb to mute the E string. A carry over from playing guitar… I know it’s one of those “No-No’s” that is mentioned early on in the B2B course, but I’ve played this way for over 60 years and there’s something about that old saying about “Old Dogs and New Tricks”…  My fretting palm however never touches the back of the neck though - only the area that touches is where my fingers meet the palm, and that area rests lightly on the bottom side of the fretboard neck to use as a guide as to where I’m at on he fretboard, and to also allow for not only a straight down fretting style, but also an option to angle my fingering attack a bit when I wanna throw in just a little bit of bend for tonal expression … I do play a very low action which requires very little finger pressure to play notes and still get around the fretboard quickly when needed.
